Just Because A Post Is Featured Does Not Make It True

Just because a post is on the feature board on ActiveRain does not mean the information in the post is correct or true. activerain featured posts

Posts get featured in several ways but NOT  one of those ways is one where ActiveRain staff are going through every post and verifying all the facts making sure it is all fact or opinion and that there is no misrepresentation of facts or errors in statements of fact. There is just not enough time in the day to do that and not enough staff members at ActiveRain Corp. to be able to handle such an expectation.

People who like a post you wrote click the suggest button on your post to alert the staff at AR that there may be a post worthy to be featured.

Then there are those who game that system. There are of course, as is to be expected in any group or community those that band together and as a group click the suggest buttons on each other posts.

When ActiveRain first started they did not have the employees who could be assigned the featuring task so they had members volunteer to be moderators. The moderators had feature authority. Of course because moderators are human, there were situations and accusations of some of the moderators 'playing favorites'. This practice ended and then the staff primarily were in charge of featuring posts.

The staff get accused of playing favorites as well. But as I have been here since 2007 watching all of this I see that it is more so the groups who click the suggest button over and over again on the same people within their groups. The staff is caught in the middle because there is no clear evidence that this happens. The staff also have other duties during the day besides featuring posts so to have to research where all the suggests are coming from is also time consuming. But AR can see who suggests who.

Of course there are great writers who are featured often because they are good writers with content that is valuable and opinions that are worthy of sharing.

So when you read a post that is on the feature board on AR- just because it is there- remember that the facts contained therein have not been verified.

Just because something is written- does not make it true.

There are a lot of posts and featured posts with incorrect advice on how to do a short sale and who can do a short sale, etc.
There are a lot of posts and featured posts about how to run your business, what to do as an agent, what is ethical or not, etc.
There are a lot of posts and featured posts about SEO, internet marketin, social media, you name it, that is not exactly factual or verifiable.

Remember before you take someone's word as truth, verify the facts. That includes me. Don't just believe what I say, check it out, do your due diligence.

One way you can find out whether something is working that a post tells you to do is to go ahead and ask the writer, how is that technique working for them? How many houses have they sold because of applying that technique or action plan. Have they gotten any real people to sell a house to or list a house for because of something they are telling you to do?

Always go back to: How's that working for you? Remember, don't blame the AR staff for posts that are not true or verified.

Bill- ;) Make it an awesome week!

Rodney- If I were you, I would be writing counter posts to those inaccuracies because the consumers are reading.

We read the re-blog by Russel, and what you say about "friends" clicking for "friends" may be true, but we saw one that was featured that was just entered, had no time for any to comments, and it was featured only seconds after it was entered ~The member herself could not even understand why this happened!

Larry and Sheila- That happens because the staff is looking at the reader board and chooses a post they would like to feature. You don't have to have any one press the suggest button and you don't have to have any comments on your post to get featured. There is no pre-requisite to that. Friends obviously will click on their friends posts suggest button. That is not what I was saying. Friends liking their friends work- nothing wrong with that. It is a consorted effort to create a circle wherein part of the operation of the group is to click the feature button of each other. That is like me emailing all my subscribers and telling them to come and click the suggest button on every post I write. That smells fishy to me.

But more important, this post is about wrong information being featured, that is to be expected and the blame does not lie with AR staff but rather each member needs to do their own fact checking  before believing what is written. Katerina

Katerina, I thought that Lenn had feature power and was featuring posts, but I think Lenn has the privilege to do so as she is such a longstanding outstanding member of AR. To the ones who game the system, I say to them, 'Get a life!' Getting featured won't get them $$$ in the bank.

Whenever I'm online, I always have the phrase "beware the false expert" in the back of my mind. It concerns me when AR features SEO or social media posts that are proven inaccurate or completely wrong in the comments, because I wonder how many readers acted on the info in the post without fully understanding it. In cases like these, featuring a post just because it has a lot of suggests or it sounds authoritative and innovative is doing a disservice to the AR community.

I know this has gotten off the original topic (don't believe everything you read, even if it's featured) but since the comments have gone this way anyway, is there a specific certain amount of blog posts that are featured each day or is it just as many as thye feel are worthy?  Just curious.  And how do they decide what is on the Daily Drop?  I hear that sometimes those aren't even "featured" even if they aren't featured.  -Kasey

I appreciate you focus and the "warning" of not checking the facts ... IMO one of the greatest agent failings is not knowing what we don't know!  Like others ... I'm "suggesting!"

Kasey- The Daily Drop is most often the duty of one of the staff at AR. I can not divulge who that is because I don't want them to be bombarded by members if you know what I mean. The Daily Drop much of the time are chosen from psots that are feature worthy or discusson worthy but were not featured.

There are not a specific amount of posts each day to get featured. Like if you notice, on the weekends when the staff is not working, you will not see as many posts being featured. There have been times where a feature board string of posts seems to be frozen in time from Sunday to Monday. THey are working on that issue. It is more a time issue. The staff have many other duties and tasks other than featuring posts throughout each day. If they come on to the blog roll, to pick a post to feature but yours is already off the blog roll, then yours won't get seen. However, if people who subscribe to you and read you suggest your post to get featured, at least the staff can then see your post. Just because people press your suggest button still does not mean it will get featured. Look at this post, see how many people re-blogged it and how many people clicked the suggest button and it still was not featured. It is not because it was not feature worthy. it could be that I wrote it over the weekend and there were no staff avaliable during that time frame, it could be they just did not want to feature it, it may be that by the time they looked at it the post was too old to feature. Timing seems to have a lot to do with it all.

John- I get your drift but there is no way to verify the accuracy of the post without taking a lot of time and man power which AR does not have. I think the personal responsibility ultimately lies on the reader to verifty their facts. I also tell agents to contact the writer of the SEO or Social Media or SHORT SALE article and ask them questions about how is it working out for them, do they close transactions, get business etc based on their advice they wrote about. When it is just an opinion, we as the writers should state that it is an opinion and not fact or say, based on our experience, etc. Katerina

Frank and Sharon- Lenn is one of the founding members of AR. She also stepped up to the plate to help AR get in and stay in business. She is to be totally commended for how she contributed and still contributes and if she does have feature powers than I don't mind if she features all of even her own posts because most of them are feature worthy and that is why I re-blog them. Janet- Your assumption is not true. The fact that featured posts don't get comments does not mean they are not worthy of being featured. For instance, AR wants us to write hyper local content. One of the ways to incentivize this is to feature good hyper local posts. But the members typically don't like to read about other areas and hyper local posts don't fit their desire to gossip and vent.

You will see that posts that get the most comments are mostly posts of taking a strong side and then the discussion that ensues because of that, polarizing articles, gossip and venting. That is human nature.

I do like to ready hyper local posts about other areas because I have traveled much of the world and love geography and culture and people. So this expands my point of reference and develops my empathetic nature.

I wish more members would read and comment on hyper local content because this is great training for them to model in hyper local. Katerina

Katerina - Loved your comment to Janet about hyper-local posts.  So much of my own blog are hyper-local posts with little to no comments but guess what?  Those are the ones that generate the most leads for me.  Those are the ones that I get the most calls/emails on from consumers in my local market.  Personally, I would rather have on prospect from my blog than a bunch of comments (consumers rarely comment).  Leads are much more valuable to me and my business than comments.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy it when the AR community comments on my posts, even my hyper-local posts (my first feature ever was a hyper-local post) but it's not why I blog and they are not my target market.  I blog for business and my target market is consumers in my own local market.  All the rest is just icing on the cake but I would still come here for the cake even if it didn't come with icing.  JMHO

Katerina:

When I reblog a member's post, I try to check to see if the information is correct or if I know it is correct, then I reblog.  I read post and gain knowledge.  There are many members who always write factual and great posts.  I trust them implicitly and do not check what they say.  Otherwise, I do check if I feel some of the information is questionable.  Others, I don't care about and I don't check or reblog.  I love that your post received so many interesting comments.  We are a great group at ActiveRain.

I am a newbie at AR... but it doesn't surprise me in life that people think that just because it's written that it is true!
