Halloween in Evanston and the North Shore - 2011

For those moms and dads who are wondering when the official time for the City of Evanston's trick or treating is... the city's website lists the official date/time frame as Monday October 31st, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.

So send the little ones (and some of the big ones) out in their costumes, door-to-door, to "ahem" collect for the good cause (hey, those dentists still need clients ... fluoride is quickly putting them out of business).  Make sure to check their "take" when they come home to make sure everything is safe.

Personally, I think that any snickers bars are unsafe, and I have to confiscate those. (yes, all of them... and those twizzlers aren't lookin' too safe, either).

Additionally, Evanston is sponsoring a Halloween Skate at the Robert Crown Center's studio rink (1701 Main) from 4:30 - 5:45 on the same day.  If you come in costume, the admission and skate rental are free!!  So if you don't feel comfortable sending the little ones out in the cold and/or rain, extorting candy from local residents... this is a nice alternative.

Other communities in the area are holding their official Halloween trick-or-treating times on Monday the 31st:

Skokie says from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m.  They ask that you respect the privacy of homeowners and don't rink doorbells prior to 3:00 nor after 8:00.  If the house light isn't on... don't ring the bell.  (and, of course, don't egg the house!)
   They also offer a Haunted House at the Skokie Playground (which has been operating since October 8th, but will also be open the 30th and 31st from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. with more than 20 haunted rooms. (not recommended for kids under 10) Admission is $8.00.  For more info call 847.674.1500.

Wilmette is holding trick-or-treat hours from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Glenview says from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Winnetka says 3:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Kenilworth offers trick-or-treating from 'After school' until 'dusk'... (hey, that's a novel approach).

Northfield says 3:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Glencoe suggests 4:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Highland Park says 3:00 - 7:00 p.m., and offers a Bark-O-Ween Charity pet costume contest... so if you want to thoroughly embarrass your pets, dress them up and bring them to Port Clinton Square in Highland Park to participate in a costume contest to benefit Tails of Hope, a no-kill, not for profit adoption/rescue organization.  You can preregister at tailsofhope.org (sorry, I didn't give you much time, did I?) Or registration tomorrow will begin at 4:00 p.m. followed by the contest at 4:30 p.m.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here are a few suggestions to keep our little ones safe for Halloween.
  • Accompany your children (or send an older brother or sister).
  • Make sure kids cross only at corners — and look in all directions first. Remind them to use sidewalks or walk facing traffic so approaching cares can be seen.
  • Use makeup instead of a mask, so your child’s view is not obstructed
  • Caution them against crossing the street between parked cars, where drivers can’t see them.
  • Warn children not to eat any goodies until you’ve had a chance to inspect them. When in doubt, throw it out.
And people, let's be careful driving out there, knowing that our precious cargo is out there in the dusk, or dark, running around in search of candy, and paying less attention to "being careful" than they ought.  No driving while texting... look carefully down the streets before driving, and slow it down!
Let's have fun, and let's be careful out there.  (and don't step on the scale the following morning... now THAT's scary!!
And if there are any Butterfingers in the stash I will need to confiscate those.  It's a good life.
Hi ALan - Oh no Joe.. it is the MOUNDS with almonds (or without) that are great.... I would always check my children's bags to make they looked safe and take out (the mounds) to further protect them...
Alan, I tend to randomly "test" the candies based on the mood I'm in. So far they've all been fine. But you never know :)
Alan,
Hey I am not that picky, however with my present drive to get back in shape I am staying away from too much sugar.
Home is where the hearth is.
Joe - I'll keep that in mind.
Gay - I guess we'll have to confiscate all of those.
Eric - can't say I would mind a goo "payday" either.
Sally - the whole box?
Tatyana - it's going to be a white Halloween.
Larry - an excellent idea... so you won't be needing those candies..???  I'll hang onto them for you.
Alan....we don't have set trick or treating hours here.  The kids just head out on Octoer 31st when it starts to get dark & come in whenever their parents make them....  As for the candy, I have a daughter with a nut allergy so I am "forced" to confiscate those Snickers & Reeses & eat them myself.  I could toss them but that would just be wrong to throw out food!
Sussie - oh, Sussie... I can't make you absorb all that bad-ness..... I just can't. I'll take that bullet for you. 'Cause that's just the kinda guy I am.
Christine - oooh... I forgot about the dreaded Reeses.
