Snow in October? - Town of Ramapo Road Closures as of 10/31/2011

Would you believe snow in October?  It seems that fall has bypassed us, or at least that winter has snuck in a quick preview.    The prediction of between 5 -9  inches of snow for this weekend was not really taken seriously by too many.  After all, we haven't seen snow in October since 1962; to say the least, we were unprepared.

The snow storm that Rockland County experienced this weekend, which left about 6-7 inches of heavy wet snow on the ground, reeked lots of havoc to the county.  The trees, still green with leaves un-shed, couldn't withstand the weight of the snow, and fallen limbs and branches were the result, taking with it many of the power lines.

Many of the local streets are still blocked with downed trees and downed electric wires.  Thousands are still without power, two days after the storm.  The schools have been canceled for today (bet the kids are happy) because school buses can't get through many of the local thoroughfares due to the downed trees and downed wires.

For those of you who plan to be out and about, here's an update on the road closures in the Town of Ramapo as of 10/31/2011:

Highview Road
Brick Church Road
Grove St
Brookside Ave

Brookview @ Carlisle

Carlton @ West Maple
Carlton between Spook Rock and Pine Rd
Hawk Street

If you are one of those without power and are looking for a place to warm up you can take shelter at these warming stations

The Joseph T. St. Lawrence Center at Torne Valley - open until 10PM tonight

The Ramapo Senior Citizen's Center at 319 Haverstraw Rd in Montebello - open until 3PM today

If you're out and about, be careful, stay warm and most of all, have a safe day!

Lora - you are right about those wet, destructive snow storms - ugly!  I am really feeling for all the people that have been without electricity.  Hope all gets up and running soon.

Lora, I can't believe you guys have snow in October already.  I hope this winter is not going to be as bad as last year.  Stay warm.

YIKES! That is not good. I don't know how you can handle it. It's too cold in Texas for me! Hope it warms up for you soon!

Kathy, this one reeked more than its share of havoc on the county and now more than 3 days after the storm, there are still way too many without power.  Many of the roads are still not passable as well.

Rita - I share those sentiments.  Hope this winter is milder and less snow than the last one was.

Cal - I've no complaints about the temperatures for the past few days.  They were mild enough to melt most of the snow.  And, thank goodness for the sunny dry weather so that the clean-up from the storm could proceed (though not fast enough for my taste).

Joni - Cold in Texas?  Were'nt you just complaining about the hot and dry conditions just yesterday?

We are going through a terrible drought! I would be happy with summer all year, but a drought is never good! :)))

Joni, hope it rains on your parade pretty soon, but only enough to solve the draught.

Michelle - Thanks and I could do without the cold and the road closures too.  Hope this isn't a prelude to a rough winter.
