Two months ago I realized (or maybe it was my gut in the mirror) that I was getting out of shape. Was it the new job, being back in Texas and living on BBQ, or simply the fact that I've become lazy about exercise? Probably a combination of everything.
I decided it was time to start running and so I put forth a plan; I would run every day in the evening, and rest on Wednesday and Sunday. On my 2nd run my 10-yr old daughter (Payton)asked if she could follow me along on her bike. Spending valuable time with five kids can be a challenge at times and so I told her it was a great idea. Never did I realize how much fun we would have together. Payton is funny and wow does she have a gift for gab. Mostly I listen (because I can hardly breath running) and she does all the talking. Listening to the stories of her day and watching her laugh at her own jokes and comments makes the time pass by so quickly. Before I know it we're 2-4 miles out on the greenbelts and it's time to turn around and head home. Knowing I have her as a running partner makes it so much easier for me to stay motivated to keep running.
As I reflect back over the past 5 months I can hardly believe how much has happened since I joined First American Title. I've literally come to know hundreds of agents. Much like time spent running with my daughter, the days have come and gone in the blink of an eye. An industry that I knew little about and people who I knew nothing about have become friends, clients, and partners in business. I must admit that I'm having the time of my life. With all the fun I'm having the business has been great too. We continue to grow market share and clients report that our team continues to deliver exceptional service.
It's unfortunate that it took me so long to find a career I am so passionate about. This doesn't mean it's easy by any means. Like my runs, it's challenging and every day brings another obstacle. My dad always taught me that most often the best things in life are the hardest things to achieve.
I have come to believe that everyone has the right to be happy in their career. Real Estate is a noble career. You have the blessing of being able to help others find happiness in their own "American Dream". I envy your courage and the risks you make each day as you do so much on your own with so little support. Take pride in what you do and find happiness in helping others. When others around you complain about the economy, the brokerage, the crazy buyer or seller, the bank industry, the title company, or anything else that brings you down just remember one thing; you have the ability to decide today if you're going to find happiness in your career or not. Happiness is not the result of financial success, it's the result of making good choices and of seeing the good in all things around us. A positive attitude and maintaining integrity will get you far with clients and will eventually bring financial success.
I wish each of you all the success you deserve over the coming months. Don't lay down and give up because it's the holiday season. Decide today that nothing is going to get in your way.
