Lubahn Trail near Golden
This 2.5 mile trail loop is in the gully below and south of Castle Rock on South Table Mountain. The trail climbs about 400 feet to the base of the cliffs. There is access to the top of South Table from the south extent of the trail – please be advised that you are trespassing on private property if you go above the trail.
Professor Jack Lubahn, a professor at Colorado School of Mines, built the trail in the 1960’s. He took beginning Geology students on the Mesa to show them examples of the stream deposits underlying the basalt caprock, and thus introduced them to Colorado geology. The trail has been extended to create a loop hike of moderate difficulty, and is an excellent one hour excursion. The trail receives an abundance of sun all year; take water in summer months. Make sure to pick up a guide at your favorite outdoor retailer and pick up any other essentials you may need.
