A few weeks ago I blogged about the importance of changing the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and tying this event in with daylight saving time. Changing the clocks is a great reminder to also change the batteries in all of your alarms.
Even though we don’t change our clocks here in Arizona we need to make it a point to remember to change out those batteries. This is the weekend! Consider this your reminder! I am a home inspector in Mesa Arizona and I make it a point to talk to each of my clients about the importance of the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in their homes. I tell them about making this a great excuse to invite friends and family over to help change the batteries and then enjoy a great meal.
As promised, the following is a great recipe for Italian Soup along with the best garlic bread recipe in the world. (They are my wife’s recipes – don’t tell anyone I told you!) They are easy to make and absolutely delicious!
Italian Soup
Stew Meat (2 - 3 pounds)
1 C carrots - sliced
1 C celery – sliced
1 onion
2 T butter (or margarine)
4-6 C water (depending on size of Crockpot)
1 can beef broth
1 C chopped tomatoes or canned tomatoes
1 can tomato paste (6 oz.)
½ tsp. thyme
½ tsp. oregano or Italian seasoning
dash marjoram
dash Tabasco
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
¾ C broken spaghetti
Parmesan cheese
Brown the stew meat & simmer until tender. Sauté vegetables in butter. This is a must! Put all ingredients into Crockpot on low for 6-8 hours. 1 hour before serving, put in broken spaghetti & let simmer on low for 1 hour. Ladle into bowls & sprinkle with parmesan cheese.
Renae's World Famous Garlic Bread
1 loaf French bread, unsliced
1/2 C butter or margarine, softened
2 cloves garlic
1 t dried parsley
1/3 C grated parmesan cheese (real fine powdery parmesan in
can/plastic jar, actual block parmesan doesn’t work)
Combine butter, garlic, parsley & parmesan and put in micro for 10
seconds. Stir. Put back into micro for 10 more seconds, if needed. Stir.
Preheat oven 375 degrees.
Slice French bread in 1” slices, cutting all the way through. Spread garlic mixture on each slice and on top of entire loaf. Wrap bread in foil, leaving top partially uncovered. Bake 15 minutes.
There is nothing better than dipping the garlic bread into the soup! I also suggest a bottle (or two) of 7 Deadly Zins to enjoy with your soup and bread. Makes for an awesome meal!
So don’t forget to change all of the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors this weekend. Invite your friends over and enjoy the above recipes. And make this an annual event! Oh and when they ask tell ‘em the recipes came from that Home Inspector in Mesa Arizona!
