You asked - what is that bush with the red berries growing in Haiku Maui?

That shrub or tree is called Christmas Berry because it makes lovely red berries in the winter time. Actually the little red berries are something you would find in a peppercorn mix... the pink red black multicolored peppercorns.  It's a pretty bush at Christmas time.

Christmas berry trees grow wild in Haiku and other lowland parts of Maui, and they can become sort of a weed, growing into dense thickets.  This native shrub from Brazil can be cut down to make good firewood though so it's all good.  Birds like the berries, and honey bees too.

Thanks for the horticultural lesson. Can humans eat the berries, too?

HI Georgina - It looks a little like a pyracantha.

I wonder if it's related.

Debbie -yes they are not poisonous, but they don't have much taste either.  They are rather dry with a thick skin.

Susan - It does look very similar, but the Latin name is Schinus terebinthifolius.

Hi Georgina, that's a really pretty bush. I so love the flora and fauna in Hawaii. My all time favorite is the Plumeria tree, pink. Have a nice evening. Mahalo.

They appear to look like small grapes. They are an aquired taste as I remember...

I wonder if you can book them down in a sugar mixture and make a jelly? They sure would be good to make a wreath for Christmas.

Brazilian pepper trees are an invasive tree here in Florida and are often removed.
