Why Do We Fall Back and Spring Ahead?

By
Real Estate Agent with Cedaredge Land Company

Why Do We Fall Back and Spring Ahead? Well that is a great question. I decided to find out just why we do this twice a year. In the wee hours of Sunday morning we will be switching from Day Light Savings Time (DST) to Standard Time.

DST was actually started in 1918 but not widely followed. It was left up to local communities on whether or not they wanted to change their clocks back and forward. In 1966 Congress passed the Uniform Time Act which set the start and end dates of Standard Time, but didn't make it mandatory for each state. Whether or not a state followed DST was left up to each state legislature. Alaska, Hawaii, the US Territories of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands don't observe DST. They are always on Standard Time. In 2005 Congress passed legislation extending DST by one month. We use to turn our clocks back on the last weekend of October, and we now move them ahead three weeks earlier in the spring.

DST came about to increase the amount of sun time when most people are awake and active. DST decreases the amount of sunlight in the morning and increases it in the evening. Studies have shown this cuts down on power usage, traffic accidents and crime.

^@Marte, that's actually an interesting thought, about how the train schedules would be jeopardized with all the states doing their own thing with regard to DST.  Also, isn't it Arizona that doesn't observe DST at all?  So interesting...

I have noticed thorough my life span that we people sometimes do stuff for stupid reasons. I don't know for sure if this is one of them but it really hasn't hurt anyone.

Hi, everyone and thanks for stopping by. I'm glad this post was informative to everyone.

Marte...transportation use to play in a role in this time change deal, because each community was allowed to decide if it wanted to participate in DST. Now it goes by state.

I did forget to include Arizona in the states that doesn't observe DST. That was an oversight on my part. And I know that. I use to live in Flagstaff.

Hi debbie,  Thanks for the history lesson.  The time switch doesn't bother me, it is the shorter daylight that does!

Although I am not a big advocate of Daylight Savings Time (DST), if the studies are correct, that DST cuts down on power usage, traffic accidents and crime - then I can understand why we still do this annually and I do support the idea.

The original purpose of DST was to give farmers the extra hour of daylight at the end of the day.  It was first proposed way back in the late 1700's by Benjamin Franklin.

Like post #25 - my bedroom clocks automatically reset ahead of schedule since they are older.  Seems I'm never expecting it , so it is always interesting when it happens and it takes me a while to figure out my bedroom clock does not match the rest of the house.

Your story made me think about my mother!  When I lived in Dallas, TX and my mom lived in Louisville, KY, there was an one hour difference in the time zone.  So, every year when the time would change, my mom would think that we would be on the same time zone.  I never understood her logic, because she was changing her clocks too, but she was always confused.  Sure miss you MOM!

WOW that was really interesting!  I always wondered why we did this and it makes perfect sense.  I just never thought about it in the sense of saving on accidents.  Joy

I didn't read all of your responses, but we don't participate in DST in Arizona!  It's tough to remember when everyone else is changing their clocks and we don't.  Focusing on the spring ahead and fall back is huge to remember what time it is everywhere else!  Thanks for the blog!

My summertime neighbors are from Arizona, and they also don't have Daylight Savings Time.

Another reason that you did not mention was that someone wanted more daylight in the morning when young children were walking and biking to school. Not sure children do that in today's world....

I just don't get why we still do this. During winter months when driving is the most dangerous, we have less daylight, and so during commutes at night when it's snowing/raining whatever, people REALLY don't know how to drive with all of those things compounded. Why not just keep more daylight?

Hi, Pam. I'm glad I could be of help. I did forget to include that Arizona doesn't participate in DLS time.

The internet is so wonderful. You find out anything you want.
