Do YOU know where your house keys are?

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Taylor Real Estate

As a Realtor I take responsibility for making sure the key to your home is in good hands. So I have to ask, "Do YOU know where your house keys are?"

I recently showed property that was not my listing. I called the listing agents office and was told they would be out when I arrived, but would leave the keys outside the office door.  I picked up the keys and I was SHOCKED!  The key chain had the owners address, and name on the key ring!  Now, thankfully I WAS the one that got the keys and not some thief or vandal.

I had to ask myself why would they put their clients at such risk? Do they think about the "what ifs" that can happend when you keep your clients keys in this manner?

I personally think it stupid, unsafe  and just wrong!  I have my clients keys in a safe place with no marking on the keys or key rings that would make sense to anyone other than me.

If you are considering selling your home - ASK BEFORE YOU LIST! Never assume.  The Realtor you choose to list and market your home should be:

1. Educated about the area.

2. Easy to get in touch with.

3. Keep you informed of what is going on DURING the listing or sales period. You don't want a Realtor that calls you to list it and then again in 6 months to Re-list your property.

4. Your Realtor should have your best (and safe) interest at heart.

5. The simple Golden Rule - The Realtor you choose should treat you the way they would want to be treated.

That's it - Short and simple.  I can and do all the above.  If this sounds like the kind of Realtor you want showing and selling your home, then Click or Call Kelli Wall Today.

I can't remember a time when I did NOT code keys to my clients' properties....I also keep track of who has them!

In some areas combo lock boxes are used..some agents to keep things simple always use the same combo. This is also unsafe since an unscrupulous agent can pass the information to unsavory people.

There are too many agents that forgo training and mentoring where they would learn the very important how to's of the business in exchange of a higher commission from a broker who doesn't train. Obtaining a license only means one knows the laws pertaining to (to hopefully keep them out of trouble) It does not teach one the ins and outs of how the business is conducted.

Patricia, yes, thankfully it's not a HUGE issue that someone is going to go looking for real estate keys, but you just never know.  And Giovina I agree 100% - Edward I know some that do that too (same code for everything).  It's just a safety issue I wanted other to think about.  We get comfortable sometimes and forget the things right in front of us!
