Huntsville Alabama, Foosball Tournament, 2011
Just a little background info
This post takes me back a few years to when I was first introduced to Foosball. The year was 1975, I was living with three buddies, we were in our twenties living life and having a great time. We all had the pleasure of meeting Franz from Germany...affectionately called the "German" or simply by his last name "Matschi." Franz came to this country to explore America on a one year Visa and while on his journey he met up with a couple of my other friends in Colorado...who decided to bring Franz back to Chicago where he stayed (with us) for the rest of his time in the USA.
Franz, it turns out was a master on the Foosball table and since Foosball was at its height in popularity and no self respecting bar/tavern (where we spent a lot of time) would be caught without a table...we learned to play and of course we were all trying to beat Franz. We played in every bar that had a Foosball table...even traveled to Wisconsin to play the bars up there. In the beginning we were embarrassed a lot because they were good, even the girls were beating us, but eventually we all got better (lots of quarters) and we started winning and no one could beat us off any table. I finally beat Franz, first of my group of friends to do that, in September of '76...hey that was a big moment for me.
We used to play at a bar outside of Chicago called the Zoo, so many quarters and beers were dumped into and on that table that it made good sense to buy it which I did and I still have that very same table. The last game I played was in the basement of my house in Illinois some seven years or so ago.
Fast forward to the present.
I called a contractor to do some work at my house and through talking with him found out that he is involved in tournament Foosball play and that this weekend the 2011 Alabama State Championships of foosball tournament is scheduled at Suds Bar & Grill in Madison Alabama, November 4th and 5th with additional play on the 6th.
I stopped in at Suds Bar & Grill this morning to check it out and snapped a few photos. I was not aware of this tournament, but plan to get involved.
