Madison Alabama, Foosball Tournament, 2011Madison Alabama, Foosball Tournament, 2011

Just a little background info

This post takes me back a few years to when I was first introduced to Foosball.  The year was 1975, I was living with three buddies, we were in our twenties living life and having a great time.  We all had the pleasure of meeting Franz from Germany...affectionately called the "German" or simply by his last name "Matschi."   Franz came to this country to explore America on a one year Visa and while on his journey he met up with a couple of my other friends in Colorado...who decided to bring Franz back to Chicago where he stayed (with us) for the rest of his time in the USA.

Franz, it turns out was a master on the Foosball table and since Foosball was at its height in popularity and no self respecting bar/tavern (where we spent a lot of time) would be caught without a table...we learned to play and of course we were all trying to beat Franz.  We played in every bar that had a Foosball table...even traveled to Wisconsin to play the bars up there.  In the beginning we were embarrassed a lot because they were good, even the girls were beating us, but eventually we all got better (lots of quarters) and we started winning and no one could beat us off any table.  I finally beat Franz, first of my group of friends to do that, in September of '76...hey that was a big moment for me.

We used to play at a bar outside of Chicago called the Zoo, so many quarters and beers were dumped into and on that table that it made good sense to buy it which I did and I still have that very same table.  The last game I played was in the basement of my house in Illinois some seven years or so ago.

Fast forward to the present.

I called a contractor to do some work at my house and through talking with him found out that he is involved in tournament Foosball play and that this weekend the 2011 Alabama State Championships of foosball tournament is scheduled at Suds Bar & Grill in Madison Alabama, November 4th and 5th with additional play on the 6th.

I stopped in at Suds Bar & Grill this morning to check it out and snapped a few photos.  I was not aware of this tournament, but plan to get involved.

Nick-I remember lots of Army Day Rooms had foosball tables. Probably picked up from the German culture. Those who played seemed to really like it.

Wayne-I don't remember playing or seeing tables when I was in the Marines.

George-most people would just say I'm touched.

Nick, my husband and his friend play foosball most Friday nights on the table I bought him for his b-day a couple years ago! They'd be all over that tournament!

Wow I haven't thought about Foosball in years!  We used to play all the time too.  I actually miss it now that I think about it.  It was always alot of fun.

Peg-what kind of a table did you buy him?  I have a Garlando Football table.  Traded out the plastic playing top for glass and changed out the green field for green felt...I'm so used to playing on that table that the new ones are harder for me to get used to.

Debbie-it was really a great bar game.  I didn't realize how much I missed it until I found out about the tournament.

Nick-so how did the tournament go? Were you able to get in, or at least joina league for next time? Fooseball was always fun...as I remember, though, it got even more fun as the evenings progressed!

Nick, I bought him a Halex full sized table. Not sure about the felt, but it works fine!

Marie-I didn't join up yet, but do plan on stopping by one of the local taverns where members play weekly.  Even though I haven't been on a table in a while I think I'll do well and hold my own.  My biggest challenge will be getting used to the newer tables...and yes the game gets more fun as you get warmed up and have downed a "few" beers.

Peg-nice table, I'm sure he's having a lot of fun on it.  Hey I just watched the weather for Edmonton...you guys are down to 19F...oh well...upper 60's here today.

Nick ~ I grew up with Fooseball and was pretty good at it.  It sure brought back some good memories for me.  Thanks for telling the story and I hope to kick your butt one day!  Ha

June-hope is a good thing, but I really hate to see anyone indulge fantasies...well some are okay, but this one not so much...you need to be realistic :))
