Clear Creek in Golden Part 2
Most of Clear Creek you are able to view from downtown is popular with kayakers and tubers. However, Clear Creek heads North East to connect with the Platte River and has walking/biking paths along the way. These quiet spots are perfect year round for family friendly activities like fly fishing or panning for gold! Fly fishing is a popular past time in the area. There are perfect spots up or down from the rapids that are serene and beautiful, without being far from the paths and parking. Clear Creek has healthy populations of rainbows, browns, and in higher stretches, cutthroat. Are you a fly fishing novice? Classes are available here. Depending on the weather, there are different times during the day that provide the best fishing. Remember, Clear Creek water comes from Loveland pass, so dress accordingly and if the area is snow covered or icy make sure to watch your step!
Gold panning has come back to the Golden area in a big way. Although Colorado is known as the Silver State, it also ranks second among the gold producing states. Over 40 million ounces of gold have been produced in Colorado! Golden is a town built during the Gold rush and there are reports every so often of people finding significant amounts in Clear Creek. Panning is a great way to spend a relaxing afternoon with the family. Stop by Gold-n-Detectors downtown for supplies or more information about the area. Depending on where you go outside of the downtown Golden area, make sure to stay on public property. Pans and other tools may get confiscated if you are trespassing. Also, water levels can change often depending on how much snow is received in the area so check before you go for any areas that may be closed due to high water levels. Parking is located at Lions Park, the ballfields and adjacent areas. Vanover Park is also available for parking and provides a take-out site for those continuing downstream.
