One of the biggest issues that we have in downtown San Diego is "The Quiet Zone". After many years of fighting with Train Horns the city's "Quiet Zone" should finally be completed by the end of March, 2012. All of the new gates, signal lights, medians and traffic signals should be completed by Febraury and tested in March.
For all of us who love living and visiting Downtown San Diego this will be a great relief. I moved to San Diego in 2005 and this had already been a big issue prior. For those of you not aware, there are many Governmental, State and County trains that go through Downtown San Diego. When these trains go through approximately 13 crossing gates from Laurel Street to Park Boulevard; train horns are heard all through the day and night. The worst was from the engineers late at night and early in the morning that were required to make one long and two short horn blasts. Since these crossings are so close together on more than one occasion the engineers would just keep the horns blasting as they went through. This is not something that a highly developed Downtown Residential Community appreciated between approximately 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. in the morning.
We will all be so happy that we will no longer have to wear earplugs to bed and will be able to get a goods night sleep as so many other U.S. city residents across the county enjoy!
