C'mon agents. We can do better than this!

Ever wonder why the general public has such a low impression of our industry. Eric gives us one example here. How can anybody conclude that this house is rental ready? He says it all in his title..."C'mon agents. We can do better than this! Of course, he's right.

C'mon agents. We can do better than this!

About a week ago, I scheduled an appointment to show a rental property of another company. I usually have my leasing specialist take care of these but it wasn't too far and it got me out of the office a little early that day.

Anyway, I show up at the house to meet the prospective renter. She was with her sister and her younger son. They were all pretty nice people.

Then, we went into the house.

The first thing to greet us was the odor. I couldn't tell right away what it was, but turned out to be an incredible combination of animal feces and urine, wet dog, dirty clothes piled in multiple places and dirty dishes, beer cans and food all piled on the counter and in the sink.

I'm only happy that we went in for one reason. So I could get these pictures! Check them out below.

As a real estate agent, I'm disturbed that someone, anyone, would put this house on the market before it's completely cleaned out. I understand if you're still moving furniture and some other things out, but this place was disgusting.

I called the listing agent afterward and asked why they didn't wait to clean it before letting people in to see it? His response: "Your people should be able to look beyond the condition of the house. Are they still interested?"

How many people do you think that client told about their experience and that house?

I'm sure you'll agree with me when I say...

C'mon agents. We can do better than this!

My answer would have been they can look beyond the condition of the house.  They cannot look beyond the smell and the filth.

HI RICH!  There are some things you can look past -but if you can't even go in because of smells to look past it - that's another problem!

Rich, thanks for reblogging this. The more people/agents that see this, maybe it'll make a difference. I can hope, right?

I agree 100% with Gabrielle's comment #2.  Smells are difficult to look past.  That property is no where near "rental ready."

I am with Myrl and Gabrielle. Smell is my petpeeve! I always get stuck on that and cannot pretend "how wonderful" a property is when I cannot breathe. Thank you for sharing this blog from Eric Michael.
