Two evenings ago (Halloween evening), I was in Honolulu and trapped in traffic. Where did all these people come from? I felt like I was in Manhattan or downtown Chicago during rush hour. Intersections were grid locked. It took me 2 hours to go a reasonably short distance.
I had appointments in town and then was going to catch a quick dinner with a good friend to avoid the rush hour traffic home.
When I finally met up with my friend for dinner he suggested we try to go to Waikiki and watch the Halloween crazies. So after fighting our way in and finding the one in a million parking stall, we decided to go to the front of the International Market Place.
For the next couple of hours we saw a sea of people. I had heard that Halloween was a big deal in Waikiki, but had never seen it. By 8pm the number of people on the street grew to a point that the sidewalks were packed solid with mix of locals and tourists. If you were in a hurry to get somewhere Waikiki was not the place to be.
I took a few pictures to better give you a taste of what it was like. I avoided taking any pictures of some of the more outrageous costumes. I can say that if you have children and are in Waikiki, Halloween may not be the best day to be out after about 8pm. Before that time it was pretty much rated PG, as it got later it shifted towards rated PG-13 and R. I hate to guess what it would have been like by midnight.
The one thing I noticed was the crowd was very well under control. I saw no one causing trouble of any kind that I saw. Everyone seemed to be having fun.
