Halloween can be everyday for Realtors!

Real Estate Agent with Texas Landmark Properties

Halloween can be everyday for Realtors. Beware reading this story because it is pretty scary...Realtor discretion advised.

I showed a property over a decade ago to a mother and daughter moving to S. Austin and we found the perfect property close to their work and school.  The showing was set for 7pm in the first week of November on a dark, stormy central Texas night. There may have been an Owl in the front yard that hooted.  I know that by the time we arrived a little late the homeowners were a bit agitated because the lady who answered the door said that her daughter was upset about her homework which she said was more important than us seeing the home. But it was too late to back out now, since we were invited in and the homeowner said to go ahead and take a look.

As we climbed the stairs, the daughter requested that we read a note that she posted on her bedroom door. It said:

A Spirit lives here .. I have tried everything to get rid of him... His name is Howard Rubio ..he comes to visit in the early evening.

When I opened the door, I saw a large picture over the bed of Marlyn Manson,  all dressed in black. The lighting was bad and it was sorta difficult to see the rest of the room.  I moved over to the closet and when I opened it, a terrible smell filled the room and strange sounds came out.....

The Mother and Daughter jumped back and went running down the stairs and actually jumped into my car... and we drove off with both of my clients saying they would never buy a house that had Ghosts.

So the next day, the Listing Agent called wanting some feedback and an explanation of our odd behavior in leaving.  I explained to her how a grown man can get scared at opening a closet with strange smells and odd sounds coming forth.  At that point she indicated that her client's daughter was a little strange and that she had been leaving her room 'pretty messy' every time there was a showing.

After she talked to her client's daughter they discovered that she had 'fixed' her room to scare anybody who wanted to buy that home, because she wasn't going to leave her school or her friends.  She did have a lot of fun the next day at her school telling her friends about the smells she had planted and the voice activated toys she had placed in the closet to  trigger funny sounds.

All to say, that we as Realtors often run into various versions of Howard Rubio, especially with kids who have lots of mixed feelings when the Realtor shows up with clients...  and with distressed homeowners and their kids facing a Short Sale, it is almost normal behavior for kids trying to hang in on a very bad time in  their lives.

I am curious, did this property ever sell?  Got to love the creativity of the daughter.  I agree, we never know what we will find behind the doors that we open!

That poperty did finally sell!  My clients were just too affected by the showing to consider it again, so we continued to look for several weeks before hitting paydirt.

Kids can be creative when it comes to protecting their own territory.  I'm glad the home finally sold.

Hey, RC, I’m impressed that you recognized Marilyn Manson, even though he is sooo last week!  Staying in tune with the teens can be an asset.
