What to look for when buying your first home

I remember when my husband and I were shopping for our first home. We were recently wed, expecting, and excited to start our family in our dream home. I can't say that the experience was all happy...we were under a lot of stress. Being inexperienced homebuyers, we had a huge list of things we wanted in our new home.

As we started our search and looking at one house after the other, we quickly realized that our list was truly unrealistic. We figured out that we needed to look past the paint color, the nasty carpets, and the ugly furniture.

I will never forget the day we waked into the little townhouse in Alexandria. It was a corner unit with plenty of light. However, it was renter occupied and a total mess. The kitchen was filthy with nasty dishes in the sink, the bedrooms had so much junk in them, you really could not see the room not to forget the nasty pet stench, BUT the house had good bones. It felt like it could be HOME.

Two months later, we welcomed our son into our new home and started building memories. I will always look back fondly at that experience. We learned a lot from it.

So, if you are a new homebuyer, here are some of my tips:

1. The first house you see could very well be the one.

2. Don't let the paint colors and furniture turn you off, those are easy fixes.

3. We all want an updated kitchen...look for a kitchen with good cabinet space and structure. You can always update and make it yours.

4. When shopping for your home, take plenty of photos and notes. keep a journal and rate each home you see.

5. Pay attention to the neighborhood and surroundings. Location...Location...Location!

Finally, if you are ready for that experience, don't forget to call me!
