Hotel des Artistes - 1 West 67th Street Hotel des Artistes Upper West Side

Originally built to house painters and sculptors, this beautiful 1918 building - with studios that feature double-height windows and wonderful light - quickly began to draw artistic residents from other fields.

In 1922 Rudolph Valentino America's hottest movie star at the time rented a bachelor pad at Des Artistes, even though he was married to his second wife, Natasha Rambova at the time.

Actually he was still married to his first wife, Jean Acker because his divorce in California would not be final until the following year. Valentino was charged with bigamy in California.

Fed up with Hollywood's provincialism, Valentino and Natasha escaped to New York. Not wanting any more trouble from the authorities Valentino moved into des Artistes alone. Natasha resided with an aunt who lived on the same West 67th street block.

Besides Valentino, des Artistes famous former and current residents included artist Norman Rockwell, playwright Noel Coward and former NYC mayor John Lindsay.

On the ground floor of the Hotel des Artistes is the elegant Cafe des Artistes - noted for it's naughty murals by resident Howard Chandler Christy.

Hotel des Artistes converted to a coo-op in 1970. It has 18 Floors with 101 Apartments. Building amenities include a Garden; Fitness Room; Pool; Laundry Room; Rooftop Deck; Attended Elevator.

As of this writing there is currently one active listing at the Hotel des Artistes. A large 1 bedroom duplex, plus home office or Den, with 2 baths. Original wood paneling in living room and all original details throughout the apartment.

Price: $1,620,000 -  $1,640,000 monthly maintenance: $1300.

Financing Allowed: 50%. Tax Deductibility: 66%. Transfer Fee: 3%: Payable By Buyer. Pets Allowed; Sublets Allowed. Community Board: 7, School District: 3.

Thanks for the history lesson on this lovely building.  I wonder if Norman Rockwell did any of his painting there?  I love his work.

Thanks Jennifer, I think he did. It was designed as "live-work" space for artists.

Beautiful description Mitchell.  I'm surprised at the permisiveness of sub-lets.  It would seem that would encurage investment buyers.  I suppose investment buyers are important in that market.

Buautiful old building.

Lenn, Sublets are allowed but not investors. You can only sublet 2 out of 4 years. Owners usually have to live in the apartment the 1st year then they can sublet for 2 years but must move back into the apartment after 2 years.

Jeff, Thank you and thanks for stopping by.

Melissa, Thank you it is a wonderful building.

Ginger, Thank you. Once a New Yorker always a New Yorker. You can leave the city but the city never leaves you.

Hello Mitchell,

Intriguing historical building and I love the tall windows. My windows where I presently live are floor to ceiling and I absolutely love the light...I face west and one of my windows faces southwest with a view of the bay so the afternoon sun is beyond description.

I love these old buildings...their architectural features are always unique and imaginative and I get lost in time gazing up at them when I am in historical districts.

What direction does this building face?

Hi Jo-Anne,

Your home sounds magnificent. The building is on the north side of the street - it has studios with artists northern light and studios with southern light that face the street. The whole block of w 67th street off central park is made up of studio buildings.

More info: The NY Times Streetscapes wrote about it back in 2000.
