In Michigan, If You Get Medicaid for Your Child, You Owe SEIU Monthly Dues!

Real Estate Agent with Retired

In Michigan, if you receive Medicaid benefits for your child, you owe $30 a month dues to SEIU. Why? In 2006 parents of children receiving this aid were classified caregivers and as such, by default, public employees making them automatically members of the union and requiring them to pay union dues to SEIU. Talk about Medicaid Fraud!

In 2006, then Governor Granholm reached this agreement with the union resulting in $6 million or more in additional monies into the union's coffers. In 2010 she also declared that in-home daycare providers were state employees and therefore also required to pay dues. The 2010 decision has since been overturned but the state senate is blocking the overturning of the 2006 requirement.

I expect that soon some "progressive" legislator will declare that Social Security recipients are effectively government employees and required to pay dues.

The story can be found here.

Anybody need to wonder why, after decades of Democrat control, Michigan is in the shape it is?

I would say that a stetch on the dues, it make an interesting test case in the courts.

Good luck and success.

Marxist Unions like SEIU are trying to regain the dominance they once held.   With a Powerless Congress, and pro-Union president Obama , they are gaining ground.

Election Day November 2012 is "make or break" for the United States of America.

It's not dues, Mike, it's a fee.  The union is working hard and it's leaders need to be compensated for it.  Please call it what it is...

Saunders - Not sure how the SEIU can defend this.  I certainly can't.  Freaking loopholes.

This is one of the issues with a union shop state. In right to work states (like Florida), union membership is optional even if its in the company. :)

My gripe today is with the teachers' union in Chicago.  With an offer of a 16% raise over 4 years on the table, they have still gone out on strike.  Their median income is already $76,000, not including benefits.  With 79% of the students not reading at grade level and 80% not math proficient at grade level, the teachers refuse to be evaluated by standardized test scores of their students.

Ridiculous.  This is why school choice, including private schools & home schooling, is so necessary to compete with public sector unions.
