OK, the kids are all amped up on a sugar high -- too much candy! What to do? Well, as I watch the birds and squirrels get ready, I figure I better enjoy the outdoors a bit myself.
It doesn't have to be springtime to have some fun bird watching. In fact, depending on where you live, you may have better luck in the winter months due to the fact that many birds will seek out an easy meal.
A simple, fun and inexpensive activity for you and your family is to place a bird feeder in a special place in your yard. You can buy one, often for less than $10, or build one out of scrap wood or empty plastic milk or soda containers. You can fill the bird feeder with anything from sunflower seeds to "store-bought" bird feed to grain, cereal or breadcrumbs.
Once filled, place the bird feeder near a tree or bush, or on a fence; the more sheltered the better. Your family can have fun spotting different kinds of birds -- and squirrels. To make it more fun, keep a journal handy and log your entries based on bird, animal, and feed. Watching and listening to the birds is quite relaxing -- and you'll be surprised at how much fun the kids have setting it up and waiting for their first visitor.
OK, it's not just for the kids ...._/)
