An Attitude of Gratitude- Meet Pat Williams of Angel’s Closet

I first became aware of Pat when my daughter left for law school. She took the clothes and shoes she wanted and left the rest for me to bag up and donate.

I had seen a flyer at a local store in Redlands for “Angel’s Closet” so I called to find out what it was all about. I impressed when Pat Williams called me back and told me about the program she runs.

Redlands East Valley High School (REV) in Mentone, CA. has given her 3 large classrooms at the school.  She gave me a tour of her shop. The first classroom has all the incoming clothing, shoes, underwear, purses, jewelry, wallets, etc. The second classroom has formals, tuxedos, suits, shoes, socks, sports coats, shirts, dress pants for both girls and boys. They also collect caps and gowns for graduating seniors. The third classroom is filled with everything a student could use; coats, jeans, tops, purses, shoes, socks, wallets, jewelry, etc.

I asked her how this program works. These items, new and slightly worn, are cleaned, ironed, hung on display racks just like a store, and students from any of the local high schools can come and pick out 2 outfits each visit. I asked how the students are deemed eligible and she told me if a parent, teacher, counselor, principal, minister or social worker calls her and gives her the students name, they are eligible.

Pat also collects donations and she drives to the local mall and shops at “Torrid”. Pat selects clothing for sizes that she does not have in her store. She also goes to businesses that are closing and asks them to donate to her store. I saw about 100 pairs of new tennis shoes still in the boxes, Reebok and Nike that had been donated. She also gets backpacks for the students.

I took 16 bags of clothing and shoes to her store. She was so pleased and shared several heart wrenching stories about reaching out to the kids. She had me crying when she told me that she had just found out a girl at a local high school did not get to walk with her class as she could not afford the $38 fee for the cap and gown. Pat felt awful and said she would have given the girl the $38 if she had known. Her program had been started to make sure things like this never happen. The student had beaten the odds and was graduating with a 4.0 GPA but did not walk with the graduating class. I said someone dropped the ball on this situation and it should have never happened. So many business owners would have also reached out to help. Pat says she hopes word of her program gets out to more community leaders hence more people will donate and send students to her that are in need of assistance.

Last month, I donated another 5 bags of clothes and while I was there, a family showed up with a student and she looked so excited to be going inside to try on clothes and pick out several outfits.

Pat Williams is truly a wonderful person who works full time making sure that all the students from the local high schools get new clothes and also getting a new haircut as well. We know how important it is to have high self esteem. It is so important to get these kids through high school and on their way to college so they will become healthy and happy adults.

Many wonderful business and civic leaders assist Pat with events. In September 2011, there had a fund raiser tea held at “Martha Greens-The Eating Room”.

This is Pat on the left at Martha Greens.

On Nov. 6th, there was a Cut-a-thon held at “Technicolour Salon” to donate funds for Pats cause. Due to the cold weather and rain, Pat is asking for people to send her Payless Shoes Gift cards for the students. Look for warm coats and donate so the students can get to school dry and warm. There is no more bus service for high school so many have to walk.

Pat Williams is truly an inspiration to us all. Of course there are many causes out there but I feel we need to look in our own backyard first. What could be more important that helping our students get a moral boost to help them get through school, attend the Senior Prom in a beautiful prom dress/ Tuxedo or Suit?

Anyone interested in donating clothing or funds can contact Pat Williams at angelscloset08@aol.com. Send her an email and she will email or call you back. Her Facebook page is “Angel’s Closet Charities

*Also anyone knowing of someone who is in need of her assistance, contact her and give her the information.

Hi Kevin,

I did not know that! It seems like the articles we publish for the contests do not get the remarks like our others do. I try to read several contest entries daily because of this. Vegas Bob was complaining that people are stopping but not commenting. Everyone should be commenting. Just say nice picture or great post or have a nice weekend...something but to click and not comment is almost rude. You want others to comment on yours so do the same.

Kevin, I will go and comment on yours right now.

Kristin,

I could not spare another moment if I didnt comment on your beautiful piece.

This is a woman that Mo Anderson would love to hear about and who could quite possibly as us as a company to help out.

With the power of Keller Williams behind her from the top down, who knows where she could go and how much good she could do.

Call KWRI and speak to KW Cares and see what happens.

Hi Kevin,

I appreciate your thoughts and I will do that. Our future is in our children and we must make sure they get through High School and go on to college. One thing I forgot to add in the post was that she gives the kids a business suit in the spring of their senior year, so they can go out for job or college interviews. That is why she also collects men and women's clothing too. Pat Williams seems to think of everything.

When she told me how this poor girl had graduated with a 4.0 and had a terrible family background and pretty much raised herself but the school wouldn''t let her walk with her class even though she had a scholarship for a top college. I was so upset that it made me cry, then she started crying and we were both standing there crying like babies. I said that should never happen. Call businesses and ask for the $39. I would bet most any business would give out the money for a student. Unfortunately Pat didn't find out until after the ceremony was over. What this could have done to her morale when she was forced to stand on the sidelines. I cannot imagine how this even happened.

Kristin - that is a great post to be Thankful for. The idea is great to serve the local kids. It is sad to hear a student not walk her graduation for $38. Like you said, local businesses would have pick up the mistake in a heart beat.

Hi Mike,

Yes any of us would have sent the money immediately. I cried so hard when I heard this story. I hope it gives the girl the aspiration to try harder instead of giving up. My understanding is she had such high scores, that she was offered a full scholarship. I hope she is very sucessful and succeeds. Most of our kids have had many breaks in life and never wanted for much as it was all given to them freely without asking.

Happy Holidays.

Kristin-  What a wonderful story.  Unfortunately, our toddlers get so much of our attention we forget that our teens often suffer as well.  It's unthinkable that someone  would not be allowed to walk down the aisle for her own graduation because of $38.

Hi Kathy,

Pat Williams, the lady I wrote about, said to me "If I have my way, this type of thing will never happen again at least in Riverside or San Bernardino County where I have connections with the High School Counselors." Hopefully this girl has already completed almost 6 months of college now and has forgotten about it.

Happy Holidays.

Even at my age I recall the angst of the teen years. I cannot imagine having to bear the additional burden of worrying every school day if I was the butt of jokes of gossip because I or my family could not afford a wardrobe that would allow me to blend in with my peers.

You are so right John.

As kids, I am sure I was terrible and laughed at someone who dressed weird. Luckily as we got older, we grew up and became humanitarians. These kids just have to go there and pick out 3 outfits, accessories, a warm coat and right now she is getting warm blankets for their beds too. Hard to sleep if you are cold.

Peer pressure is so important and kids just want to have friends and fit in with everyone else. Pat gives these kids a chance to do just that.

Happy Holidays.

Hi Gene,

Yes she is a special person. Her husband is there helping her all the time too. They are a wonderful couple and she does such a wonderful service for the community.

Like I have said before, our kids are the future and we need to assist them to get through school and onto college. For whatever reason, it is not their fault they are in foster homes, latch-key kids, surrogate parent for the younger kids or whatever the reason may be. In these economic times, sometimes the parent has lost his/her job and just cannot buy the blankets or warm coats for them to wear to school. In Calif., we have stopped bus service for High School so all the kids have to walk if they do not have a ride. This can be cold in these frigid mornings. This morning at 7:00 a.m., it was 31 degrees. I would want a warm coat. And sometimes the rain is a problem and they arrive at school all wet and drenched.
