First day of Huntin' season

Yep it was opening day of the season.  I haven't missed going in 47 years. I actually went hunting this morning.  Our ranch is only 10 minutes from town so it isn't a chore. I got to thinking today about the first hunt my dad took me own when I was eight.  I recall I froze to death, but as far as I was concerned I was with Dad, and he might has well have been Davy Crockett. He wouldn't let me freeze to death, much less be eaten by wolves.

Anyway, Don't worry...  the only thing  I shot this morning were some photographs. Additionally some of the best sleeping in the entire universe is in the middle of God's forest when it's about 55 degrees.  It is funny how the older we get the less we are concerned about the game bag.  I guess it is more about the experience.

When I got to the office one our associates asked if I had done Bambi in. When I explained there were 100 % survivors today she cheered loudly .

Maybe next time Trey.  Deer seem to go into hiding when hunting season comes around.  Good Luck on the Hunt.

I use to hunt alot back in Kentucky, but as I've gotten older...I don't have much of a desire. I would rather see them in nature and let em live. I never did care for cleaning game much anyway.

Here we have so many deer its like shooting fish in a barrel.  We sometimes have to kill some of them to thin out the populations otherwise they would all starve to death.  Although I'll admit, I'm not much on hunting personally.

My "rite of passage" came on the YO Ranch two months after my 9th B-Day. Spent most of the morning shivering and snuggling up to my dad to keep from freezing. I can still remember the  smell of his hunting gear, musty from being packed away in an Aggie footlocker for 8 months a year. And he's been gone for 18 years.. Thanks for that post. It took me back to a good place..

P.S. Don't remember when I made the turn, from "acquire, level, hold, squeeze" to "if I shoot this sucker, I'm gonna have to dress him and drag him back to the truck".. I think it was about 35...

Trey, Sounds  like you had an exceptionally peaceful and enjoyable morning.  The deer are so pretty.  When I was young I enjoyed the country. Now I am a total city woman.  Everyone needs some peaceful place to go to enjoy the quietness and relax.  Glad Bambi and all the others survived today.

"The deer are so pretty."

Don't move to Austin. After a couple of years you be saying "Deer are rats, with hooves"
