Why is Occupy Philly Censoring on Facebook ?

It came to my surprise today that my comments were deleted from Occupy Philly Facebook's page.  And needless to say, I am unable to make any new comments.   I noticed when I went to the page, I had to "relike" the page.  What I find very surprising here is that this was supposed to be a movement that prides itself on the Freedom of Speech and democracy, NOT censorship, exclusion and a form of big brother!

Occupy Philly - Censoring on Facebook

Yes, I have been both a supporter and a critic of Occupy Philly.  I have written several blogs about the movement and have kept active on all the recent news.  None of the comments were obscene.   But what is going on here is whoever is moderating the Facebook page might see something they do not like, and simply delete a user instead of allowing additional discussion which goes against everything the Occupy movement stands for.

I am asking for a public apology from Occupy Philly about their censorship of Facebook.  And if they reinstate my account for discussion, that is up to them.   Either way, I am getting fed up with it.

What are your thoughts?

Hi Stephanie,

Lets see - people protesting that they have to pay back student loans.

So many drug uses, rapes and violence incidents that the police had no choice but to shut them down in our West Coast cities.

Nope - you guessed it, I am not a fan of the group or the movement.

I am surprised at how many think they get business from the media option....Fb is for KIDS - I use it to check out rental prospects; however, I don't think VIABLE business comes from this source....Google+ is for the ADULTS

Wallace, I have gotten business from Facebook. All my facebook friends are adults.

it is a great way to keep your name in front of your sphere of influence, reconnect with past customers, and aold friends who are sources of referrals.

Regarding occupy Philly (or Wall Street) they are costing the city millions in police and sanitation overtime. Low level employees are provented from getting to work, and are losing their jobs. Small businesses are hurting because of them. They are making things in our society worse, not better!

Chris and Stephanie, Deletion of free speech is for the weak who can't defend their own position rationally and civilly.  They can't stand opinions other than their own, so I'll be surprised if you get that apology.

Chris... you know where I stand with Occupy Philly and the whole Occupy movement.... let's start with your issue. Yes, it goes so against what they want, freedom of speech. Something like this ticks me off. What, they can only voice their opinion, and nobody else matters? And now you want respect? lol

In regards to their whole movement... here is why I didn't support their movement, their thoughts... from day 1..  To complain about paying back student loans is absurb. Just like many that did strategic defaults on their homes. I can see if you are struggling, but if you are living comfortably and decide to default on your mortgages and student loans, you are then just as bad as the gov't in certain situations. What happened to the morality of things. What about responsibility? What about setting examples for your kids?

Yes, we can sit here and complain of the gov't spending... how the big banks got over on several issues, and so much more. And I do believe in freedom of speech and any movement, even if I oppose it. But this "Occupy" movement lost it's focus early on. And they have become disgusting about it... have stolen from each other... there have been some rape cases within the movement. What this tells me that many, yes, many... have no clue why they are even there. It's just another way for them to spend their time and waste other peoples time, money, and resources. Sorry, but I feel this way and can say this, because I remember when people first started protesting the war after 911.... a news reporter asked a few people questions to why they were out there protesting the war...this one couple said we aren't sure, but because it's our right, freedom of speech. And I see many doing the same thing with this Occupy movement. The eladership within sucks... too many followers, and again, many who have no real idea why.

A month ago.... 15 people were interviewed at Occupy Wall Street, asking for 1 word to describe why... 90% of them said, come back to me later or in an hour. You have to be kidding me... obviously you just proved my point, that you have no real idea why. That many are just followers with nothing else to do. And look... most or many are very young kids... many of the same ones that voted for Obama. And now many say voting is a waste? Yet they want to make a difference? lol  This is just pathetic.

Chris.... sorry... lol  Just that this is getting under my skin and as you stated, many are getting fed up with this movement now. It's out of control and they have lost their focus.

Wallace... first off, google + is new... secondly, I know a few agents that have made half their sales through facebook.. ... or their fan page. I should keep thy mouth shut, but your statement is so close-minded. Besides, this post was not about facebook vs google +. I'll keep the rest of my thoughts to myself regarding FB vs Google...

Hi Christopher and Stephanie - I was part of the 60's, and I'm getting heavy flashes of deja vu. OWS is a chaotic mix of individuals and ideas right now - there is no cohesive "approved" message, and any action by a small group of individuals is no more representative of the overall philosophy than would some racist slogan be rightly accepted as representative of the tea party's philosophies. Yet there are people on both sides who will rush to those judgments at the slightest excuse. The dialog is the only hope we have, and those who would undermine it, from either side, are those who are most dangerous.

I think one of the things America can pride itself on is Freedom of Speech. I don't always agree with it especially when people slam our troops or take positions that hurt others, but it has been lifted up and maintained by many, especially those troops over the years. So anyone who censors words or comments they disagree with is showing a weakness and unwillingness to truly engage in conversation, only willing to have their words heard.

At this stage we need everyone to listed to the other side and find common ground that we can move the country forward upon rather than simply digging trenches and refusing to move or listen to the views and opinions of others. I believe many in this and the tea party movement are just simply frustrated with everyone in government being unwilling to address the issues and be honest with themselves and with each other to move the country forward. But not being willing to listen to criticism will get us no where.

I saw this post on another blog and responded to it there, but I'll add my 2 cents here, too.

I experienced the same phenomena on their facebook page. Two posts, both vanished within a few minutes. It really is frustrating.

However, I just noticed moments ago that there are posts on their page that do contain opposing opinions, so perhaps our experience was just some kind of fluke. I still wish I had gotten an answer to my question (what do they wish to accomplish?), but maybe there just isn't one. Anyway, these guys have been evicted, which I agree with completely. And the mayor is attempting to create a law that allows them to protest within particular windows at particular places, the way a protest SHOULD be staged. I think the Occupy movement has become counter-productive to their goal, assuming there is one beyond simply "occupying" whole areas.
