Creative Ideas For The Kids' Table - Chalkboard Paint and Holiday Dressing

Creative Ideas For Your Kids Table

A couple of years ago I bought a kids table and chair set at a yard sale for $5 with the intention of refinishing it.  It sat in the basement, as good intentions sometimes do, until recently when I pulled it out to sell at my yard sale.

I thought, "who's kidding who...I'll never get to that project, I might as well get a few bucks for it."  I just didn't have the motivation to invest the time needed for the job.

As I was rummaging around my basement, I saw the can of black chalkboard paint from my recent "pumpkin project" and noticed the picture of a kid's table on the front of the can.

Suddenly, I was inspired and highly motivated to paint the top of the table with chalkboard paint.

I immediately went from not wanting to be bothered... to wanting it done yesterday!

I lightly sanded the table and both chairs.

I Spray painted the table and both chairs with primer.

I Wrapped some paper around the bottom (the legs) of the table, and spray painted the top with chalkboard it three coats.

I Painted the table legs and the two chairs with latex paint.

And...the boys love it!

No time to paint before the holidays....

Here's a fast and easy way to DRESS UP THE KIDS' TABLE

A king size pillow case is the perfect size to cover these little chairs.

Use wire ribbon for a decorative bow to hold the cover in place.

An inexpensive plastic tablecloth cut in half and tied at the legs with matching ribbon completes the transformation.

Alexandra:  Thank you, thank you!  Your enthusiasm and support mean the world to me!

Myrl:  How wonderful!  Thank you for the Feature!

Joanna:  The idea wasn't was pictured on the can of paint, LOL!  I did do all the work though!  Could look really cute using pastel or primary colors for the legs and chairs to be more childlike, but I prefer it to match my kitchen.

You had a brilliant idea and you carried it through. Plus look how happy those grandsons of yours are too!

Honestly, I would never guess it's the same table and chairs. You're a genius!

Love the chalkboard paint on the table and the Christmas motif on that little set is adorable.  You are "tops" in my book!

Ellen:  It's awesome.  When my kids were little we painted the bottom half of their playroom walls with green chalkboard paint.

Sharon- you are the most creative person I know.  And you make it sound so easy.  I once saw a powder room where they'd painted part of the wall with chalkboard paint for any and all guests to "sign in" whenever they wanted.  I loved it.  I have a small framed chalkboard in my powder room and my friend's daughters love to leave a message when they're visiting.

Sharon, I love chalkboard paint! They need to do that everywhere, since graffitti has become such a nuisance! I have clients that have a chalkboard in their kitchen and the weeks menu is written out so there are no surprises! I would love to do something like that, but evenings aren't always spent at home and dinner can't be made in 14 minutes...

Love what you did with the table!

Hi Sharon--amazing how creative you are.  Using the chalkboard spray paint was really brilliant and I can see how your grandchildren are really enjoying your idea.  And then you go on to dress up the whole thing.  Could you fly to Maui for a while--I have a series of backed up projects that could use your attention!

How cool is that? I love it and very clever. Keeping the little kids busy for Thanksgiving dinner is something to be thankful for too!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family Sharon!

Lou:  Thank you!

Brian:  It can be a little messy when they start going wild with the chalk, but they are really enjoying it!  It's an easy clean too.

Anna:  It almost didn't happen at all...if not for the picture on the spray chalkboard paint can.  The color paint I used is something I had from painting walls in my home.  Glad you like it!

Laura:  Thank you!  I love that picture too.  It makes me happy to see them having fun!

Kathy:  It was easy and I have no doubt that you could have done it just as well.  I love the powder room idea...I'll have to play with that idea a bit.

Peg:  I don't think I could be that organized to have the menu written out in advance.  But, I bet it looks great!

Janet:  Could I "fly to Maui for a while"?  Now that's an offer that's tough to pass by.  I've never been...hope to get there someday.

Lydie:  Keeping them busy before dinner didn't even occur to me, LOL!  It's so obvious too.  Hope you and yours have a wonderful holiday!

Toni:  Thank you!  You should get some chalkboard paint and let your creative juices flow!

You have the most creative mind!  I love it and thanks so much for sharing these great and creative ideas.  I have an old child's table and chairs - and I'm thinking I will do the same thing for my grandchildren.  What a grand idea!
