Home Buyers' Turn - Offs Revealed!

By
Home Stager with Prep This House Interiors Inc.

I was  reading the newspaper from home this morning (UK) and on the bottom of page 15 was a little tiny article about what UK home buyers dont like to see when hunting for the perfect property.

Here is the list:

Scruffy houses next door

Smell of dogs

Dirty Bathrooms

Weird Odours

Net Curtains

Solar Panels

Trampoline in the yard

Mirrored closet doors

 Botched DIY jobs

Cracked or peeling paint

Overgrown yards

What blew me away was the claim that 10% of people would refuse to make an offer on a home if the beds were unmade!

Only goes to show that FIRST IMPRESSIONS are so important!  Buying a home is the biggest purchase people are ever likely to make, so in the buyers eyes it needs to be PERFECT!

Kym ~ Many of those objections would turn off US buyers, too -- but I laughed when I read "net curtains" because when I lived in Ireland, I found out those are what we call lace curtains....and they look like Granny's house!!  Surprising to see solar panels though because we usually consider them an important energy-saver.

Hi Maureen... I remember when I was home two years ago, almost every window is covered with those "net curtains" they all looked the same too.. must have been a huge sale at the "Dollar" Store... Not sure about the solar panels.. maybe they are located in odd places... here in Canada  they are considered an energy saver as well.  Have no idea why you would even think about showing your home without the bed being made!

Many of those would turn off potential buyers in Canada as well.  Interesting list of items that made that list.

Interesting list Kym, thanks for sharing.  There remains an excess of "net curtains" in my area since seniors are our clientele....there was a day when I also liked them, but today not even on the table for Thanksgiving.  I know there's one on my mom's table for tomorrow.

Kym,

This is very, very interesting.

The unmade beds! That seems peculiar.

Kym, I understand the odors, the scruffy houses next door and trampolines in the yard, but solar panels? Hmm, so much for the green home buyer!

Hi Kym--what an interesting list.  I guess Brits are not buying too much property here on Maui.  We are the home of both solar panels and mirrored closet doors.  The first I adore; the second I abhor!  Interesting what sorts of items are Universal, though, isn't it?

Kym - What a fun list.  I think "scruffy" anything is not good!  Unbelievable that people would even show a home with an unmade bed!

Hi Kym,  Thanks for sharing that list.  I'm glad I know what "net" curtains are now!
