We're all Cast-a-ways...get off the island!

After football, Sunday TV is pretty limited.  However, the wife and I settled on the couch and watched Castaway with Tom Hanks and his volleyball friend, Wilson.  I'm sure some of you have seen it at some point.  Its a decent movie, not too showy with the effects, more drama than action.  Not 100 my 100 best or 100 worst lists.

What struck me, though, was how much it applied to my life and probably many of your lives as real estate professionals at some point as well.  I mean, here is a guy who is just living and working.  Then, he literally crashes into a near hopeless and overwhelming situation of which he struggles just to survive.  He had to learn to adapt and plan ahead for what the island might throw his way.  He had to make sacrifices and work hard everyday in order to make it.  Through it all, he had hope that he would one day make it home back to his fiancee.

How many of us can say that this is true?  Every day, do we:

  • Work hard in this market?
  • Get overwhelmed but push through the tough times and negative influences?
  • Find hope and do our job for the right reasons?
  • Learn something that will better ourselves and our business?
  • Adapt to difficult circumstances (like our current market situation)?
  • Make sacrifices?
  • Have a hope and a purpose?

The best part of this movie is the end.  When he takes some of his tools and a lot of initiative, and gets to it trying to better his situation by getting off the island.  Thats where we are all at during some point of our careers. We're on the island and struggling to make it work.  Lets encourage each other in this down market to think outside the box and get off the island and make our lives and the lives around us better.

Adam, Down markets are agreat opportunity for sales people to show there value and shine out among the many licensees that are the weekend warriors, dont view a down market as a struggle but as a great opportunity and capitalize on that opportunity!
