Thanksgiving Tradition

ThanksgivingThanksgiving Tradition

As a child, I remember Thanksgiving mornings filled with cooking aromas wafting from the kitchen while I watched the Macy's day parade on television (not because I liked parades, but because it was the only program televised on the limited number of channels available).  After a big dinner, we could always count on enjoying turkey sandwiches and more pumpkin pie later in the evening.

My own children will have a completely different set of Thanksgiving memories to recall because of our family's Thanskgiving tradition.  For at least the last 11 years we have served Thanksgiving dinner to the senior citizens of our church.  It is a wonderful way to honor the seniors for their contributions to the community, and to ensure that they have others with whom they can share the holiday.  This year we served over 200 people.

Our children have grown up with this tradition that we share with several other families, and we can't imagine doing anything different.  The joy for me this year was to see the children taking over the role of food serving which has always been an adult responsibility.

Tomorrow we will celebrate our own Thanksgiving with the other families that served today.  The Friday after Thanksgiving is also filled with traditions that we all cherish.

No matter how you choose to spend your holidays, I hope it brings you joy and that you are surrounded by important people in your life.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Laura, great post. I've always thought about "adopting" a family for Thanksgiving but each year comes and goes and I end up being too busy. Maybe I should just schedule it for next year right now?

Laura, I really like your tradition.  Maybe next year I can do something similar.   When I was in Las Vegas a friend and I would make about a hundred sack lunches and deliver them to the homeless. It was amazing how appreciative people were and how quickly a crowd would gather.  When I am in Wyoming I am well away from any metropolitan are and don't see many of the homeless but I know I can find a lot of senior citizens. We always ran out in a hurry.

Eric - It sounds like a great idea and I would suggest partnering with some friends.  That way you will all make plans to do it and you will have so much fun in the process.

Gary - Your efforts in Las Vegas sound like quite an undertaking.  It's true that the senior population is growing and they are so appreciative to be remembered and included in holiday celebrations.  Thank you for the encouragement and check out my next post.

Christine - Thanks for stopping by and Happy Thanksgiving!
