What is Your Favorite Christmas Ornament and Why?

I love to look at Christmas Trees at the mall, at the church, at the Christmas stores, .... everywhere!  I am always amazed at the creativity that people have. As a little girl I used to wish we had pretty trees like the ones we saw around....  So now I have a 7.5ft tree and would have a 9footer if it didn't touch the ceiling.  If we ever buy a house with taller ceilings well, .....

(My mom and her 2 grand-daughters, my daughter is on the right)

Now I collect ornaments with a passion.  In fact, I had to buy a few more trees, 3-4ft since that's all my husband can handle to accommodate my habit.  I'm about ready for my 4th tree.   The ornaments are a variety of hand-made German Steinbachs from my Germany days via my Air-Force family. Some are souvenirs from our family vacations - I love the White House one I bought at Mount Vernon.  Many come from the hands of my son and daughter - love those! There are a few blown glass or others to coordinate my lime green and red tree.

So maybe collector isn't the right word. My kids say I'm addicted.  My youngest, my son Cory, points them out to me while shopping - "Look mom, another Steinbach that you don't have" - so he can't call me mental, or he's mental!

There is one ornament, however, that might bring me the most joy. It isn't part of a collection, it is not store bought, it's not every pretty.

My brother Manuel is the most creative, craft, and art challenged person in the universe. Manuel dropped out of pre-school on the first day, so my mom says. He showed up at the front door half way through his first day. When my parents asked why, he replied - "Because they said I had to color or they would send me home." So I at recess I walked home. Now if that isn't commitment to avoid coloring I don't know what is!

Of course he had to go back to school and some years later, I think around 2nd grade he made this hideous ornament. I have it, even though the purple tissue is faded and most of the bling has fallen off after all these years.  It is my favorite ornament.  It hangs in front of my tree every year. My kids exclaim:

"Why?  Why?  Why Mom?  It's so ugly! Can't we put it in the back?

You have so many beautiful ornaments!"

- and they say it quite passionately!

Because, as I've never told them, it reminds me of much simpler days. We used to celebrate Christmas as a preparation for Midnight Mass. We only gave 2-3 gifts per person, and they didn't start with "i" or use batteries. We were allowed to open one, the one my mom picked, which was either something to wear to church or new pajamas.  We put fruit, nuts, and candy in our stockings. We had real trees. We sang Christmas carols and had carolers.

The little purple ornament, whatever it is supposed to be, is the only hand-made ornament that survived our many military moves. I found it about 20 years ago while cleaning my mom's closet.

At a garage sale, a broken, cracked Santa holding a Christmas tree light bulb might not fetch much if anything. But if that is what you got excited when Mom unwound the electrical cord and plugged it in, it still has power of building excitement of the magic of Christmas. Still have my Santa that no one else would put the same value in because they have their own never fade moments of Christmas.

Andrew, it sounds intriguing to say the least. It reminds me of the episode of Frasier where Frasier's dad blings out the house with 1960's plastic light up decorations.  Thanks for sharing!!!!

Cathy, our childhood Christmas celebrations sound a lot like yours.  My favorite ornament is one with a picture of my favorite dog on it.  Have a great weekend!

Hi Mike - That's cute! I have one for each of our dogs and I buy ornaments that reflect my kids' interests; ballet, hamburgers, piano, etc. This year I'm adding a new tradition. We lost 2 parents in the last 1.5 years - my dad and my mother-in-law. So, I bought some photo frame ornaments and will insert their photos to hang and include them (physcially speaking given I know they are with us in spirit). Thanks for sharing!

Cathy I agree with you -- the homemade gifts and the old holiday ways are the best.  Today I would have to say that my favorite ornament/s are the sparkles in my grandson's eyes as he hangs each special ornament on the tree.  He reminds all of us where it came from and loves each one.

Ah, that's so sweet! Yes I see those sparkles STILL in my 14 & 17 year old faces. Actually, their favorite part now is sorting them as we hang in layers. I can remember when my littlest one used to hang them all clustered and on the bottom and my older one going back and re-arranging them. Now we sort them, which makes them hang a little nicer and nobody fights over who gets to hang thier own (the home made ones).

Enjoy the season.

Cathy,

I also LOVE Christmas and the trees. I once had a 12 foot tree - house with vaults..had to buy a huge heavy duty stand...:) Now my ceilings are 9 feet - so I get an 8 ft tree - it's still beautiful - but I love huge trees.

I saved my ornaments through the years and had a box filled with each of my children's favorites, I have given the boys their boxes, but my daughter's wait for the day when she gets her own home.

That's a great idea!!!!

Yeah, mine laid claim on some. They also laid claim on my cooking tools, cook books. That's their way of expressing their sentiments :)

Debb, thanks for stopping by!

I am so similar Cathy.  This year we will have an 8' tree (real) and five other 3-5 foot trees (fake) all themed.  My husband is already complaining about having to pull all the boxes from the attic.  HA.  My favorites are the handmade ornaments my girls made growing up.  Many are like your purple ornament, worn from use, but they all have special meaning to me!

My mom collected nutcrackers- and I have several to display at Christmas that were hers. I made a little nutcracker ornament for my Mom years ago- now that our parents are gone it hangs on our tree- one of my favorites! Great post Cathy!

Hi Cathy.  Such a sweet story.  That is hilarious that your brother "ran away" from preschool.  Love it.  Although I don't celebrate Christmas, I very much enjoy the holiday spirit, the decorations, the spectacular light displays that dot our beautiful city, and just about everything else that makes this time of year super-special.

Cathy, super story. Isn't it interesting on the sentimental side that we love the handmade items, those touched by love, even if hideous in appearance to anyone else? I so felt what you were saying here and collecting ornaments is a treasure I agree....

Cathy, what a SWEET SWEET post and sharing personal family stories!    I know you are a passionate person, and can see you keeping your brother's homemade ornament!    I did not know about your "addiction"....  :-)    My favorite ornaments are those made by my daughter thru the years usually with the dance theme!
