InvestigatingPaying It Forward:  Another Week of This and That!

It was a different kind of week for us with the Thanksgiving holiday.  We don't make it out of town every year, so it was nice to take some extra time on each side of holiday and hit the highway to visit our families in Maryland and West Virginia.  Who knew that leaving town would open up some opportunities?

Within a couple of hours of arriving at Liz's family in Maryland, their well water pressure inexplicably dropped.  Uh oh.  Then back up, then back down.  Now I'm no plumber, and certainly not well versed on how well pumps work, and neither is my brother-in-law Peter, but an investigation was at least in order.  If you have enough general knowledge, sometimes you can deduce how things work, and this was one of those cases!  A couple of forced cycles of the water pressure relay and whatever glitch (sediment in the sensor maybe?) was present cleared.  Water pressure back up into the 50 psi range where it belonged, and no $1000 or more replacement job the day before Thanksgiving!

And interestingly, the same night that we'd read Susan Emo's post about ringing the bell for Salvation Army we encountered a bell ringer.  So of course, a little donation to that red kettle was in order!

Friday night we attended the American Mountain Theater's Christmas Spectacular show.  Very family friendly and really entertaining.  Now this event was in Elkins West Virginia near my parents' home.  Obviously not in our market and service area, but with Saturday being Small Business Day, why not put out a blog post to give them some free Google Juice courtesy of Active Rain?  Perhaps some more people will discover this gem in the mountains!

And just another typical week on Active Rain with tips given to help the community, some via blog post, some via side emails.  Isn't that what this community is about and what makes it so successful?

Bliz, it was very nice of you to help out while vacationing with your family.  No matter where we go in life, lending a helping hand to someone in need is what's most important.  I am sure that everyone you were able to help were extremely grateful.

Hi Bliz team,

Congrats on the "paying it forward" I bet they were glad you were there to help out.

This is what the Rain is all about. Learning and then helping others.

Have a great holiday season my friends.

Best, Clint McKie

Sometimes it's not just one big pay it forward, it's a collection of small things that help one another along.  Looks like you two were definitely in the giving spirit to help a number of folks over the Thanksgiving Holiday :)!  Great job :)!

Lisa, It was a good feeling that the in-laws didn't need to drop a big chunk of change on a new pump :)  And anytime I see the bell-ringers I'm going to give something.  If they can be out there freezing their behinds off, at least we can help :)

Clint, The Rain is fantastic for sharing.  Most of what we share, someone else shared with us :)

Brenda, Some weeks it's a grand slam, other weeks a bunch of singles :)

Hi Bliz, It would seems that you had a few opportunities to Pay it Forward this weekend. It's all those little things that we do that add up in the end for some Great Rewards. I don't know if I would have been able to figure out that water pressure problem, but your engineer's knowledge certainly came in handy. Who wants to be without water over the weekend.?

Bill - very upbeat and fun post! Sounds like you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and the American Mountain Christmas Spectacular sounds like a great event and good for you giving it a plug! I'm very lucky that my son is a plumber's apprentice soon to get his license (which now requires 5 years of school, 5 years of hands on work and passing an extremely hard test - not what it used to be). Whenever anyone in our family has a pluming issue, he runs out and fixes the problem. Everyone loves having a plumber in the family including me! Him, not so much - lol!

BLiz:  It sounds like you had fun while away on a mini-vacation.  It's good to get away, even if just for a few days...makes us appreciate what we have when we get back home.

Bliz this is a great reminder to frequent small business owners even when we are out of town.  I made some stops yesterday and I think people are getting the small business shopping a little better.

Jerry, The fortunate thing is there aren't that many parts to the system, and similar to some stuff I dealt with many moons ago in the Navy and in my current day job.  Some logic applied helped the troubleshooting :)

John, Tish's quote is one of the best explanations I've ever read about the intent of Pay It Forward stories.  She was gracious enough to give us a permanent loan of the quote :)

Kristine, It's been a good few days!  And always good to have some tradepeople in the family to tap for their expertise!  There's WAY more to plumbing than I suspect most people realize.

Anita, Yes it does :)

Liz, It's a great story the theater has to tell, very happy to lend them some support!

Bill and Liz, it is a good thing we have here in the RAIN. I like how it has put my life in an "organic" connection mode. I seem to be ever more present in my awareness for just about everything...even well equipment. It's a good thing. Nice that you could blog about the local community and give them some SEO AR style! Good Deal!

Jeanean, I think you've captured one of the best things about AR, I am definitely FAR more tuned in to things since we started blogging.  Opportunities to help, to promote, to just know more about what is going on.  It's definitely a good thing both personally and for our business.

This is a great post about the benefits and features (not featured post) of being in the Active Rain community.  Never really used this feature of AR

Larry, We're becoming a bit more involved (mostly in the background) helping some folks that are trying to improve their blogging efforts.  And we'll do the occasional tip style post too.  It's how we learned from others here, so nice to pass it on to the newer bloggers.

That engineering education just keeps paying off for a lifetime eh? Also, what a great show. We always hit the bluegrass venues at festivsls and Elkins....been through there 100 times, what a beautiful area.

Steve, That knowing how to think and figure things out is the best thing about that education :)  And that is a beautiful area!  Took a different route to Maryland yesterday, up Route 55 past Seneca Rocks.  Lots of gorgeous scenery along the way.

Marie, It's the whole mindset of Active Rain from what we've seen, share and teach :)
