Is This an Idea that Could Take Hold? Agents Rating Clients

By

This article at the Scottsdale Property Shop had me chuckling, but the more I think about it... why not?

The disgruntled real estate agent is setting up a website where agents can go to rate their clients - and he has the rating system all worked out.

One rating category I think he missed is the "Vacationing Buyer."vacationing on Priest Lake

These are the customers who come back every year during tourist season. This year for sure they're going to find the vacation property they really want... of course.

But every year they go home without making an offer. Meanwhile, their "favorite" agent has spent a week or so driving them around - even via boat if they want waterfront property - buying them lunch, and missing the opportunity to work with serious buyers and sellers.

I've known a few of these, but lucky for me I was not their "favorite."

One broker I knew, after spending time over 3 summers with the same couple, asked them if they had any other hobbies. Startled, they asked what he meant. He said "I mean, other than looking at property. Do you have any other hobbies?" Sheephishly, they admitted that no, they didn't. This was it.

It really sounded as if they had a favorite agent in a number of towns, and they made the rounds each year.

If Barry Wong succeeds in creating his website, I think he should include "Vacationers" as a sub-category of his 2 star rating: "People who never buy or sell anything."

Hi Marte,

A rating system for clients could be cute, but if and when we learn to only work with people we have under an agency contract, it would become a breach of our confidentiality

Leslie - it might be interesting.

Peter & Linda - That's true. I don't know about now, but when I left real estate buyer agency was so rare here that it wouldn't have been an issue. I think what the guy in the article was really mad about was the poor ratings he'd gotten from some clients... he wanted revenge!

But his rating system wasn't very comprehensive. If I was going to dream something like that up, I'd go for categories like "Wouldn't listen to pricing advice," "refused to clean the cat box before showings," "Insited on low-ball offers even when other buyers were competing," "bought a new car 3 days prior to closing," etc. etc.

It'll never happen - but kind of funny to contemplate.

Very cute idea.  We used to have a place in our MLS where we could put out warnings to other agents about scamming clients.  I think it's a great idea.  I'm shocked at what people do.

Mimi - Warnings about scammers is a good idea. I remember many years ago we had a couple of men arrive in town that were pulling some kind of scam. We never did figure out what they were doing... they'd make offers on whatever were the cheapest properties in town. Really run down old houses. Then when the offers were accepted they'd leave and go back where they came from for a week or two. Then they'd come back and make more offers.

Only once did they close on one of those - and their down payment check bounced. They also bought a variety of high-ticket items from the local stores and those things were finally repossessed.

I was working with a woman who was a "wannabe" scam artist at the time. She called one of them and asked if she could take them out for coffee because she wanted in on whatever they were doing. They turned her down, and she was really disappointed.

Can you believe she told me this??

Anyway, we warned all the other agencies in town about them.

Hi Marte- That's a very good idea!  I LOVE IT....So  many of them are eager to throw stones at us - turning the tables is fair game...

Marte - people always amaze me like in your story. I can't imagine having a Realtor drive me around in a car or boat looking at properties just to amuse myslef. Next time they should take a vacation with a tour company and pay them - lol!  Talk about get a life!

Ruthmarie - Just got notice of your comment this morning - December 4.

You have to wonder why people like to throw stones...just angry personalities perhaps?

Kristine - your message just arrived as well. This is sure strange.

I can't imagine that either - wasting someone else's time and money when you knew you had no intention of buying. Some people in this world are simply "takers."
