Kimberly SpahmerWhen Kimberly Spahmer gets in her car to drive to her volunteer shift at the Vail Valley Medical Center, she says, “I’m instantly in a good mood!  Between the friendly medical staff and employees, the patients and visitors from all over the world, and the other wonderful volunteers, I really feel like I'm a part of a family as a volunteer at VVMC."

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Kimberly to discuss her volunteer experience at VVMC.  After volunteering with other organizations in the valley, Kimberly has been with the VVMC Volunteer Corps for 1 1/2 years and has already logged an impressive 800 volunteer hours.  "My mother and mother-in-law both volunteered with the hospital, so I knew what a great experience it would be,” she said.

Kimberly SpahmerKimberly works every Friday at the Information Desk at VVMC.  Serving as the front desk coordinator and says, "I love training the new volunteers!  We have so many interesting volunteers of all ages and different backgrounds.  It's such a great variety of up-beat people.  I especially enjoy working with the Junior Volunteers from the local high schools.  They bring a fun energy to our volunteer group."

Last March Kimberly co-chaired the silent auction portion of the Volunteer Corps’ biggest fundraiser, the Fashion Show and Luncheon. "The silent auction was such a rewarding experience," said Kimberly.  "Helping to raise $22,448 through the silent auction for such a great cause made all the organizing and hard work pay off."

She is also famous for her baking skills, donating multiple gourmet cakes to each of the VVMC Volunteer Corps bake sales.  How does she bake up to 17 cakes for one sale?  She explains, “I’ve collected Bundt cake pans for years, and its fun to have an opportunity to put them to good use.  I bake all the cakes the night before the bake sale so they are fresh.”

When asked her why she has chosen the Vail Valley Medical Center Volunteer Corps to donate her time to, she instantly smiled, “I do it because every day is a new rewarding experience and I know I am giving back to the community I love by donating my time here.”

Please stop by the Information Desk at VVMC on Fridays to meet Kimberly Spahmer, or buy one of her famous cakes at the upcoming VVMC Bake Sale and Ornament Sale on Dec. 9th  from 9am-1pm.  If you’d like to join Kimberly as a volunteer and do something good for your community and yourself, contact Amanda Visosky at 970-479-5068 or visit www.VVMC.com/volunteer

Yes, David, SKIS!  I've never been on a snowboard.  Should probably learn one of these days, but I love skiing!

Haven't been out yet, but more snow on the way this weekend so will get out when more terrain opens.

Thanks, Gordon!

Deborah, it's unbelievable the baking Kimberly gets done for our sales.  Amazing!

John, I always have to run a few extra miles post-bake sale!  But it's a great fundraiser, usually bringing in over $2000.
