Did you know it’s Cyber Monday? Will you be shopping online today?

Did you know it’s Cyber Monday? Will you be shopping online today? It seems that now we have a special shopping day for every kind of business entity. The Monday after Thanksgiving is designated as “Cyber Monday” and many online merchants are having huge online sales today.

I have mixed feelings about buying merchandise online. I love the convenience and the ability to shop price, but I always fear that I am taking money out of my community by not supporting local merchants.

After a lot of soul searching I have construed a conscious conscience compromise. I only purchase products online that I am unlikely to find locally.

That would entail regional specialty items that are simply not for sale in Newnan Georgia, or very specific parts and accessories for appliances and electronics that are impossible to stock in a retail store.

Perhaps my choice to purchase locally when possible is just a drop in the economic bucket.

But it’s a start. And if others choose to do the same, it can really make a difference!

Richard-sounds like a pretty sound practice, I agree I try to buy locally as much as it makes sense.

Richard- We do a lot of online shopping but these are usually for electronic items or gift items that I have to ship. When I can, I do like to shop my small local businesses.

Richard, I have had very good luck purchasing on line including eBay to the big box stores like Walmart. I do like shopping locally as well but I'm not always in the mood for a crowd.

I agree about buying local, but sometimes you can get such a good deal online!  Like Bob said, I'm not always in the mood for a crowd either.

Wallace...

Buying online is very convenient ... saves gas ... and you don't even have to get dressed. And for those of us that live on our computers it's pretty enticing. Thanks for being the first to comment.

Gary...

I hope that your back will feel great soon! THX

Adrian...

Especially in the real estate business ... after all, empty storefronts do not inspire confidence in potential buyers.

Kathy...

Especially at the last minute, because you eliminate the "middle man" in the shipping process. Thanks so much.

Russell...

I'm just thinking about it more now, and I'm trying to make a conscious effort to buy locally. But I'm certain that I will be making online purchases as well. THX

Bob...

I have never had a bad experience purchasing online. But it's really hard to sell real estate in a town with empty storefronts and a lackluster economy. I HATE crowds too, and I hate waiting in line at the register. But I am willing at this point to "take one for the team!" Thanks for jumping in this morning.

TCT...

Well when it comes to power supplies, batteries, or memory for you computer, buying online is the ONLY way to go! THANKS.

Richard, Shopping your hometown small businesses is the only way they can survive. I learned that the hard way!

I owned a video store in the 1980's, (the ONLY one in town) I did NOT monopolize on that. I kept my prices for New Releases @ $2.00 and oldies $1.00. I was ALWAYS there for my customers, helping them pick out just the right movie they wanted. And had lot's of specials.

Then our little grocery store decided to become a supermarket!  They put in a deli, bakery, florist, and pharmacy. BAM! It closed down our little sandwich shops, our bakery, the florist, my video store, and the oldest store in town -Rexall Drugs.

The "Supermarket" rented NEW RELEASES for .49 cents until they put me out of business, and the day after I closed, they raised them to $4.00, and their "oldies" were $2.00!

So it comes down to this: USE THEM, or LOSE THEM. Especially if Cyber-Shopping, because you will lose the INSTANT gratification, of running to the store, and getting it in your hands RIGHT NOW.

Sorry, I rambled on Richard. Your support of your town touched me!

I choose to be a local shopper.  I think the small business owner is the one to whom I owe my loyalty to.  I just can't get into the cyber shopping.

Good morning Richard,

I love shopping and I love supporting my local economy.  With that said, no Cyber Monday shopping for me.

I can't think of anything we want or need online.  We're both a touchy, feeling kind of buyers.  Plus since we own our business we always try to support the smaller local business's.

Richard, I've bought things online and have had both good and bad experiences. I think the only difference with online shopping is it takes a bit longer than being able to drive to a store and 'pick it up'. I have gotten some very unique items online that weren't available here, so that's probably the only time I will shop that way...

That sounds like a good plan, Richard.  The local Small Business Saturday had mixed reviews, but some shops did very well.  It's always nice to buy local when possible, but sometimes it's difficult when the prices are radically different.

No online shopping today for me.  Last year I had a need for a couple of computers and monitors.  I did great research and bingo, yes indeed I got a great purchase price on it.  I think you need to be informed before diving in on the purchase to make sure you have consumer shopped and not got caught up on Cyber Day.
