Come try the USVI
Do you ever get tired of bundling up under layers and layers of clothes just to get something out of the car? Do you get tired of shoveling snow? Tired of people stepping on your toes in the hustle and bustle of black Friday or Christmas shopping? Well I have just the tonic. Come and sample the delights of the Caribbean but under the protection of the American flag. There are 3 major islands in the USVI ; St Croix, St Thomas and St John. All different and wondrous in their own way.
St Croix is the largest and my personal favorite. The Beaches on St Croix are fantastic and have been deemed movie worthy by Hollywood. Most famously the final scene in Shawshank redemption, where he is seen relaxing on a pristine beach, was filmed at Sandy point on the West End of St Croix. One of things that makes St Croix a little different from the other USVI's is the presence of a mini rain forest, giving the West End a unique feel. St Croix has a reef that circumnavigates the island giving wonderful opportunities for diving and snorkeling. There is also a 'wall' which is very deep and divers seem to get very excited about it (you can probably tell I am not a diver.) The historic cities of Christiansted and Frederiksted are lovely to walk through with their elegant Danish arches and walkways everywhere. Buck Island is a small island off the East end of St Croix and JFK was so struck by its beauty above and below the water line he made it the first ever under water National Park in 1961.
St Thomas has historically been known for commerce and still is. It has a great variety of high end stores to offer its visitors. Smaller and more heavily populated than St Croix, the island still offers great beaches and fine accommodation. St Thomas is a stones throw from St John and many other islands including the B.V.I.'s and because of this many a private sailing expedition starts here. This also may be a factor to why Charlotte Amalie is the busiest cruise port in the world yet still retaining its small town island atmosphere. A great open air market in the middle of town adds to this feel.
St John is the smallest and least populated of the three islands. Two thirds of the Island is designated National Park land so the beaches and scenery on St John are spectacular. I think its safe to say in terms of pricing St John is historically the most expensive island to buy on due to the lack of available land. St John is exclusive and quiet yet the two towns of Cruz Bay and Coral Bay boast many lively restaurants and stores.
All three islands offer diving, snorkeling, sailing, kayaking, trekking, parasailing, horseback riding, swimming, eco tourism and much more. All islands have great local and American cuisine and lots and lots of cheap rum to drink!!! Come visit or better still come and don't go back, its happened many times before.
