All in all this is a cute little sitting area. The bookshelves are relatively neat. The tv could be larger but it fits the space fine. The rug could be a bit larger but the wood floors are nice. Furniture placement is good for conversation and still allows access to the patio door. What really catches my eye and rubs me wrong is that the ceiling fan is not centered with the specific area. It is centered with the whole room. I'm sure that duct work played into the placement. Whatever the reasons, I'm so tired of walking into house after house and seeing fixtures that can not center with a table or a room.
I noticed the fan after I read your post it would make sense to have it centered with the rest of the room.
Laura, I think builders do this and don't think about furniture placement when putting in ceiling fixtures. I agree, it is very annoying.
I've actually done this in my own home, accidently! Need to remember to off-center fixtures to allow for "hallway" space that won't be part of the purpose for the space (such as my dinning room table). Bummer!
That would drive me crazy too, but some people just don't care about symmetry. When a house is new construction, it's not as noticeable because there is no furniture.
I doubt it will be noticed if it isn't pointed out. Focus on the cozy seating area that looks very inviting to me.
Pat & Sam - I guess you are right - Focusing on the cozy room is best.
Pam & Peggy - Very good points. A room is completely different empty!
Amy - How many times do we see extra chains and hooks moving dining room or kitchen table lights!
Wanda - Bummer! Hopefully you love the fixture you selected!
Ceiling fans in general just don't do anything visually for a room, in my own opinion. But one that's off center like this is definitely going to drive certain people like us nuts.
Laura, one man's meat is another man's poison, I will let the buyer to decide.
Doesn't look like a very comfortable space to watch TV to me, and the TV seems more like an afterthought than something that really belongs in that space. I'd go for some kind of artwork above the fireplace and put a larger TV and more seating somewhere else.
Hum....I love ceiling fans, and they are a must in my house nearly year around. There are SO many options out there that some of the "builder grade" fans are more eye-sore than asset, regardless of where they are hung. I agree with John, the TV is a major detractor.....I'd pull the TV out, put a terrific print in there, then relax the furniture in the room to make it feel less TV focused and more conversation focused.
