In design symmetry is important, It is pleasing and relaxing to the eye and can open up a vista in the distance. In this photo of a section of the La Cumbre shopping mall in Santa Barbara, the colonnade outlines the focal point of the mountains. The star shaped fountain shows the intersection of the mall's two directions. The result is that it is a wonderful place to shop and enjoy the great outdoors. The principle of symmetry applies to all design, web, print, architectural, etc. It is the detail of symmetry that can make a design great or just ordinary.
