Okay, so when you spend 5 days in Miami visiting relatives, one tends to get cabin fever after a few days and venture out to check out the things in the area.
On Sunday, my wife and I ventured with her brother over to the Everglades and took a ride to go look at alligators. We saw a few in the wild, and I even shot some video of a few babies on my iPhone which I included below. You have to really look to see them, but there are about 5 or 6 of them sitting there.
After the boat ride, we attended a small animal show on local wildlife. This included scorpions, lizards, toads and of course more on the alligators. It was all fun and entertaining, and then I even got to hold an alligator, which you can see here.
We then went to the Gator Trading Post where we met some more friends, and I posed for a photo opportunity with them. The gift shop was filled with the usual tourist type stuff for all ages, from T-shirts, hats, paper weights, alligator jewelry and other unusual stuff.
It was pretty clear that although alligators may be cute when they are little, they are not something one should consider as a pet. The instructor of the wildlife event said that an alligators brain was the size of a pea when they are little, and the size of a quarter when they are big.
So not a lot of intellectual abilitiy there, and you won't be teaching it any tricks or have it wag its tail. Probably better off looking for a dog if you want that. Also, an alligator will eat you. Not that a dog would not, but there is a lot less teeth involved.
It was interesting, and we got to learn some things about Miami and the local wildlife, and get out an enjoy the sunshine in November! Oddly enough, the day I got back to Michigan, we had a snow storm. So I went from enjoying the Miami sunshine to shoveling snow within 24 hours!
