The Village of Tarrytown is urging the State of New York to consider rehabbing the Tappan Zee Bridge instead of replacing it... especially since the planned new 5.2 billion replacement would not even offer Bus or Rail Transit services. Spending that amount of money on a new bridge concept that does not incorporate a meaningful mass transit component makes no sense whatsoever... by the time this new bridge would be completed it be completely outdated.
On the other hand, it would be way faster aand cost way less to reconfigure, rehab and update the aging span and it would also have much less of an environmental impact on the area. In addition, you could very easily spend some of the cost savings on a rapid bus transit component that could tie in with the Metro North Station in Tarrytown.
Building a new bridge would also negatively affect "The Quay", a condo development that would see the new bridge route come very close to some of it's units, it's pool, tennis courts and clubhouse... which in turn would impare the value of the condos and it's common areas drastically.
I believe that these recommendations make absolute sense and are much more palatable to the communities most affected.
