Citizen's Insurance to cancel coverage on some insured. Do you live by the coast?

Citizen's Property Insurance Corporation could terminate coverage on a large quantity of coastal properties with a value over $1,000,000.  Along with that they could reduce liability.  How this affects you and what risk you are at is something worth checking into.

The cap rate which is currently at $2,000,000 could change to be a cap rate of $1,000,000.  Other changes are in the works.

This is all being done to reduce the company's exposure to high risk coastal homes.

Check with your insurance agent to make sure your coverage is not affected.  If it is, you may want to find out what your options are.

Citizens also anounced that it will no longer provide coverage for most structures other than the main residence.

Excluded from the coverage will be screen porches, carports, pool enclosures, and patios that are not built out of the same material as the main residence. The insurer is also placing a $10,000 cap on any cosmetic damage to floors that cover less than five percent of a home’s total square footage. Among other things on the list are tiki huts, gazebos or other similar buildings that are designed to be open to the weather. Any structures that have a roof or wall made of thatch, lattice or similar materials are likewise excluded.

Frank, thanks for your additional information about what is covered and not being covered.  Very important that home owners be aware of the coverage they have or don't have.

We made it through another season without a hurricane.  Some people think we are due for a big one the question is when.
