Two Chatham-Kent Historians, Buxton residents, Bryan and Shannon Prince were recognized with the YMCA Peace Medallion for their involvement with the Buxton National Historic Site and Museum as well as the endless hours the couple have spent researching the Famous Underground Railway and it's history in Chatham-Kent.
Bryan is the author of two books and Shannon is the Curator of the Buxton Museum and Historical Site. They believe that telling the story of the plight of runaway slaves and those who risked their lives to help them is one that must be told. They have spoken at many venues and recounted individual stories of the heroes of that time.
The experiences of those runaway slaves who travelled North in that dark period in History in hopes of a better life for themselves and their future generations is a Big Part of Black History that helps give people a sense of pride in their ancestors and a better understanding of what that generation suffered to make life better for those living today. It is hard to imagine what those slaves and their allies endured and suffered.Peace and a better understanding between races can be gained through education and the relating of stories and incidents of that period.
Chatham-Kent was an important stop along the Underground Railway from the south and Buxton at one time in the 19th Century was the home of many of the slaves who gained their freedom via the Railway. At one time the population was close to 2000. During the Civil many of the men joined the Union Army and families began moving to the United Sates.Today there are only 100 residents. Every year however on Labor Day Weekend, close to 3000 visitors migrate to this little village to renew family ties and celebrate its History. The Peace Medallion was first awarded in 1987 and Shannon is quoted as saying she believes 'we have really come a long way in promoting understanding and peace.
