Pedestrian tales from the middle of the road, #1

Another day, another dead pedestrian in the middle of the road where they shouldn't have been...

In the past, I've written letters to our liberal local newspaper, the Orlando Sentinel. I've called numerous times and had lengthy conversations with at least 3 columnists there regarding the deadly serious issue of jaywalking here in Orlando- and my comments have continuously fallen upon deaf ears. I've spoken on a number of different occasions, I've spoken with members of the Orlando Police Department, the Orange County Sheriff's Office and the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.

A lot of folks just walk in the middle of the street here...and the result is that a lot of folks end up dead. Enforcement of our pedestrian traffic laws is simply not a big priority around here- and based on the number of folks that wander out or race out in the street in front of me every day, that's just fine. I'd bet that would change if you were, say, a family member of the gentleman in the following story.

I bet his family wishes he hadn't been in the middle of the street at 4:45 a.m.

So here's what I'm going to do: from time to time, I'm going to post these "pedestrian in the street" articles. While the Orlando Sentinel, MetroPlan Orlando and others willfully turn a blind eye to folks' blatant disregard for pedestrian traffic rules- even to the point of claiming folks around here are scared to walk our sidewalks- I'll shed light on folks that should've been on those sidewalks and the law enforcement organization that should've held them to it.

Chief Paul Rooney and the Orlando Police Department, this one's for you.

P.S.: If you think this might be kind of a harsh thing, so be it. But I'd venture to say it's nothing compared to the thoughts this driver will have for the rest of her young life- and the feelings of guilt she'll carry for having taken the life of an even younger person who was simply where he shouldn't have been.

Dennis:

These notices are sad.  jaywalkers are among us and we can't stop them.  That means that drivers must be extra careful while driving on city streets to avoid killing a pedestrian.

Dennis, recently in Tallahassee:

A lady was jogging in the wee hours of the morning.  She was not jogging on the sidewalk; she was not even in the bicycle lane.   She was running in the roadway, with her back to traffic.

An SUV struck her and killed her.  Tragedy for her (51 years old), and probably mental tragedy for the woman whose SUV hit her.

WHAT was this person thinking?   Life is Over.   Rest in Peace, and may God have mercy on her soul.     :(

BTW, "Liberal" Orlando Sentinel?  What an Understatement - that rag is so far Left, they are off the charts!

Hi, Evelyn:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  We had an office function at lunch yesterday, and one walked right across the 6-lane in front of me...earphones on...looking down and texting.  Folks honked their horns at him, and.... nope- he didn't flip anyone off.  He just looked back down and kept strolling along.  I could've respected him a little if he'd been mad- OK, respect is a bad term...but anyway, it's so commonplace here that the horns, etc don't even bother folks any more.  THAT'S scary.

Hi, Fred:  Thank you for stopping by.  It's truly a bad thing that the smarter and more prudent of folks have to support the dumber and less prudent- but it's even worse when the latter take to the roadways in any form.  And good point- I guess "ultra-liberal" would be technically accurate...

If you are on the street at 445am, there can't be that many people around you.  It sounds like the more important part of this circumstance was the driver of the vehicle!

Hi, Jay:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  I've never looked to dismiss the drivers' responsibilities in these cases.  The problem- whether it be at 8 pm, 2 am or 4:45am- is that folks around here have this (dare I say it?) entitlement mentality when it comes to their feeling they don't have to follow the law.

I had my phone just a bit ago, and took this...a guy teaching his son that this is the way we cross streets here.

Motorists need to be vigilant, to be sure- but we should also expect to see pedestrians in crosswalks- not median strips.

And contrary to what these pedestrians and their families might think, most motorists that kill pedestrians crossing like these folks are NOT charged- as the pedestrian is in the wrong for failing to yield.
