Last week, I helped my daughter move to the Pearl District of Portland, Oregon. I had never been to that city before and it turned into a sort of love affair with a city so different from my home in Palos Verdes. I loved the way people dress there! Of course, I didn't see EVERYONE. But, those I saw looked like they stepped out of a Timberland magazine! There was something so individualistic about their clothes too. Riding on the fareless streetcar we noticed you couldn't tell the homeless from the rest because everyone dresses in a laidback, sort of funky attire. The homeless just had more empty plastic bags. Striped long socks were everywhere. Dreadlocks are big in Portland too. Now, that is something I NEVER see in Palos Verdes! Several times on that first day there, we would stop at a street corner to decide which direction to take. Every time, someone would walk up to us and ask if they could help us with directions. We were blown away by their friendliness. The weather was crisp and cold and the leaves were all the colors you associate with autumn. As a Southern Californian, that was very different indeed! I'm not sure I could live year round in Portland because I would dearly miss walking on the beach every morning and watching the dolphins play in the surf. But, I'm so happy I have a reason to visit Oregon now that I have a daughter and her family there.
PS. The city is very pedestrian friendly too. No one tried to run us over! Of course, we didn't them we were from California. :-)
