Scam? Or did Chase just pull me out of the wrong hat like a rabbit?

short saleInteresting message today from a gentleman that said he was calling from J.P. Morgan Chase. He told me that he had a possible short sale listing for me, gave me the address and an extension for him at Chase.

I could not get his name from the message as I think his office is deep under the Pacific Ocean, judging from the quality of the message. The message was extremely garbled after he gave me the street address for the house, I couldn't understand the town/city. It sure didn't sound like any place I have ever heard of in Connecticut.

I listened to the message no less than 5 times, could not get his name or catch what he said was the town/city of the property, I could only get the phone number, his extension and the street address, plus his offer to give me a short sale listing.

The most interesting thing is.... I already have a house listed at this street address. And it is owned by a relocation company. There is no possible short sale involved here. Title has passed, it is a done deal with the relo company.

Curiosity did kill the cat, I called back the number he left and put in his direct extension. Of course it went to some woman who had no idea what I was talking about. I asked her to speak with the gentleman at this particular extension and was told there is no such extension in the loss mitigation department. And without a name, there was no information they could pull up. I also Googled the 800 number he called from. It is a toss up if the number is real or not, some say it is a Chase mortgage collection phone number, others say it is a scam. (Tomorrow. when I am back at the office I will dial the number that called my cell phone, I am not calling from my own phones in case it is some type of scam.)

Scam or not, I still can't figure it out. Anyone have any ideas here? Why me? Why a house that has been taken into inventory by a relo company? And if they have the street address correct but the state or town/city wrong, why me again? Why pull me out of a hat!?! I am not a rabbit.... Maybe it was the wrong hat, who knows?

Any thoughts? I am really mystified about this. And is Chase now calling agents with short sale listings? Or is this a case of mistaken identity. Very odd indeed.

I too have received some strange phone calls with some very cryptic messages from a 713 area code and they are proposing great real estate opportunities and alluding to my listing.  Haven't called them back yet, but I should huh?

Good evening Andrea. Scary world we live in. Seems everyday I am faced with yet another scam or legit choice. The bad guys are getting better at it than the good guys. Yikes.

Elizabeth, I was just too curious to know why they were calling on that address. I was actually not happy, LOL.

Susan, you know I will probably not let this go, LOL. I will, WHEN I figure it out, or perhaps, get to the bottom of it.

Randy, I am afraid it is not good. It makes no sense to me at all, any way I look at it. The whole thing stinks of smelly fish...

Donna, I am guessing the same thing. But what could they possibly get from me? I just don't know. YET...

Hi Andrea,

Pretty weird isn't it, you really start to wonder what it is in society to have to question everything that goes on

Andrea - Sounds like a scam to me, but if the previous mortgage was with Chase perhaps they have their signals crossed.  It wouldn't be the first time a lender got mixed up.

Andrea,

It's definitely scary since the bad guys are everywhere and getting better at pretending to be the good guys!  It sounds like a scam to me and I would run the other way!

Well I think I solved the mystery, I posted about it here.

Google hit and run

What bothers me most is that Chase loss mitigation department, in an attempt to collect a debt (as that is what they say when you call that deparment) was willing to contact a third party and discuss information about their client freely. I dont' like that at all.
