Have you ever wondered as you drive the beginning of the Barnet Highway what the little dome across from Kask Bros is for? I have driven past this building that is surrounded by trees on the bottom side of Burnaby Mountain many times always wondering what it is.
This structure is the Harry Jerome Sports Center, a 53,000 sqft sports facility and is also a Velodrome. Not that many people would know what a Velodrome is including me before researching this. This is one of only two indoor Velodromes in Canada and one of four in North America. It is a 200m long 6m wide wooden indoor cycling track with 47 degree corners. This building hosts many sporting events and is the also the home for Volleyball BC offices.
Built by Cycling BC and many volunteers between 1991 and 1997 the building looks like a miniature BC Place with the inflated dome roof. The facility has recently completed $1,000,000 of capital upgrades including a new insulated roof, new furnace, new hanging lights, 150 bleachers seats and an enclosed meeting room overlooking the courts and cycle track.
Just one more reason that the City of Burnaby is an amazing place to live if you are into fitness and sports.
