Hawaii, Winter is here - Looks like a cold one - SNOW already on the ground

Even in Hawaii it snows, its funny how many people don't realize that we have snow her on the Big Island, every year. Some years are better than others, but it always happens. I have even seen it snow low enough to cover 3 mountain tops here - what a beautiful scene that is, Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, Hualalai, that happened my first year here - didn't realize how special that was, and didn't take the time to photograph it.

But this is why I love the Big island so much, we have rain forest, deserts, Lava fields, and of course the snow - if you want it. I have watched my outside temp gauge on my truck, go from 85 degrees when I leave my house, until 2 hours later at the top of Mauna Kea, being down in the 20s, always nice to thaw out at the beach afterwards though.

I didn't get a chance to go up there yesterday and take pictures, but here a few below from a couple of years ago. We made it all the way down the mountain with a truck load of snow in the bed of my truck, and proceeded to build a Snow Man, in front of our Kailua Kona Home. We had so much traffic stopped in front of our house - it was great. And the snowball fight at the end - the best ever!

I got to tell you quick, on our way home, we stopped at Safeway to purchase some refreshments, 6 employees ran out of the Denny's restaurant and started chasing my truck - they had never been up to the snow and asked if they could just touch it - then they wanted to make snowballs - boy my 5 year old son - didn't want to give up any of that snow at first - he saw how much everyone loved it - he knew he had something here. Eventually we convinced him to share - what an experience for him also.

Let me know if you have any one interested in Hawaii - the Big Island is the way to go!!!

Aloha, and have a great day

That's great, I wish that I could go from the snow (where we live) to the nearest beach, (Southern California) in two hours.  Hawaii is BEAUTIFUL, WE LOVE IT.  The big Island is next, we have been to the other major islands.  I am jealous.

Most people dont realize how much the big island is like a mini USA, Its so big, you can take all the other Islands together, double them in size, and they would all still fit on the big island!

Thanks for the Comment - I grew up in Vegas, been to Cedar City many a time - sure can be cold - but it does have its beauty!

Those pictures are great - thanks for sharing this.  Made me smile today, while it's chilly and raining outside.
