Neighbors are Priceless in Making a Difference:
“Volunteers don't get paid, not because they're worthless, but because they're priceless. “
Sherry Anderson
This past weekend provided us with great autumn weather and some wonderful examples of our invaluable neighbors hard at work for our community.
NOTE: Change in this week’s Saturday Starbucks Social Hour – instead of my usual location, I’ll be at the Covenant Presbyterian Church-Westminster Room (Glass room off of parking lot in back of church) starting at 10am. You’ll have the chance to meet not only board members, but also learn about the Beltline project…see below!
This week’s bulletin contains the following topics:
1. Requesting your input: BELTLINE Project Look & Learn opportunity with Frank and his Maps!
2. True Neighbor Spirit is in the Can!
3. Come visit our own Peachtree Hills “island” for friendly fun
4. Holiday Market & Gift Show/P’tree Farmers Market
5. Helping our Streams/Drains breathe & flow
6. Board Meeting/Website Update/Security
1. Requesting Your Input for Beltline Project: Meet Frank & his maps!
A number of residents attended the 30th Oct Beltline Study Group at the gym & feedback was promising that the Beltline people are willing to work with our Association and listen to OUR Association’s input. So we are seeking YOUR input!
A couple of options about the roadway, light rail and walking path are being considered by the city’s project team. Some would have minimal impact on Peachtree Hills and we want to help clear up which items are still a possibility and where they may be completely “off the table”.
Therefore prior to a Beltline Project meeting to be held on 27th Nov, we want to provide you a chance to view map proposals and share input with resident Frank Summers (frankmountcastle@yahoo.com) (who’s been very busy understanding the project and potential impact to our neighborhood). Come visit Frank & his MAPS!
Dates/location (3 options):
(1) SAT 10th Nov, 10am-1pm, Covenant Presbyterian Church/Westminster Room
(2) SUN 11th Nov, 3-5pm, Kristy Gillmann’s home – 2325 Hurst Drive
(3) FRI 16th Nov, P’tree Hills Gym; 4-6pm.
We welcome each resident’s input at any of these Look/Learn open forums so that we can present a united position from the PHCA to the Beltline Steering Committee. We can’t present your position unless you tell us what it is!
2. True Neighbor Spirit is in the Can!
On Saturday 3rd Nov, a team of 14 energized and hardworking volunteers helped coordinators, Jim & Barbara Leaphart, collect over 9 barrels of canned food items for the Atlanta Area Food Bank.
This collection represents a huge increase over last year’s collection and according to Jim: “(the) hard work on behalf of those in need reflects our Peachtree Hills pride and spirit. The precious time you shared, reminded me of what it means to be a true neighbor ...... even if they don't live next door!”
What a priceless show of volunteer efforts for those in need – Thanks, neighbors!
3. Come visit our own Peachtree Hills “island” for friendly fun
A very dedicated team of merely 2 volunteers (resident/Garden Committee members - Nancy Dillon & Frank McComb) helped maintain our own ‘island’ at the entrance of Peachtree Hills Ave & Peachtree Road on Saturday. This island is small so with a few more neighbors’ help, it can continue to be a beautiful way to enter into our neighborhood. Please help! Contact Nancy Dillon – nancydillon@mindspring.com
As Nancy said: “More people involved makes the work go faster, easier and just more fun”. Our next clean up friendly fun day is scheduled for Sat 1 Dec 9:30 am. During winter months, work would only be needed ~every 5 weeks. If we had 4-5 more people “visit the island” with Nancy & Frank, everyone would be finished in about an hour !
4. Holiday Market & Gift Show/P’tree Farmers Market
Getting ready for holiday ideas? The upcoming Farmers’ Market/Holiday Market & Gift Show (Sat, Nov. 17th; 8 am - 2 pm) may help you along the way!
The Holiday Market features handcrafted gifts by area artisans and fresh foods from local farmers for holiday meals. The weekly Farmers Market has been a great asset to have so close to our neighborhood, and support of the gift market will help ensure it returns next spring. 5. Helping our Streams/Drains be free & clear
Everyone loves the beautiful autumn leaves and crisp coolness in the air this time of year. According to the Georgia Planning Commission:
(Please) Don’t Put Leaves Or Grass Clippings Down The Storm Drain!
Leaves, grass and litter clog our storm drains. Please compost leaves, grass and shrub clippings. Used as mulch, they will decompose and return nutrients to the soil, which could eliminate the need for fertilizer and reduce your outdoor watering demands. (YIPPEE!)
So while your friends, family or reliable yard crews are blowing leaves or getting rid of yard debris, please remind them to be kind to our streams and drains. In addition to potential flooding, the decomposing leaves can cause a chemical imbalance that is not good for whatever is living in the creek. So please remember: Help keep our streams/drains Free & Clear !
6. Board Meeting/Website/Security
BOARD: Everyone is invited to attend the regularly scheduled monthly PHCA Board meeting on Monday, 12th Nov 7pm in the Westminster Room at Covenant Presbyterian Church (corner Terrace & P”tree). The Westminster Room is a glassed in room off the parking lot in the back.
We’ll be looking forward to getting short reports from various committees/groups around the neighborhood and invite a representative from each group to let me know if they plan to attend.
WEBSITE: We continue to make slight modifications to our www.peachtreehills.org website. Please visit under Member page and look for photo album for a few pics from Fall Festival. And look at ANNOUNCEMENTS for any updates to my weekly message.
HELP ! ! We could really use a nice resident member volunteer to help us manage/clean up the website?? Can someone help us out with a little maintenance/management? I know there are very talented folks in the neighborhood who can help us make the site more useful and user friendly to everyone!
SECURITY: Nothing to report in Peachtree Hills and good news from our Garden Hills neighbors. According to Garden Hills weekly announcement: “ARREST IN AREA BURGLARIES We received reports last week of burglaries/trespassing on Loridans Drive and McClatchey Circle. We have confirmed that a suspect has been arrested on four felony charges. This person may be responsible for some petty thefts in the area. Thanks to Major Sellers and the Zone 2 Precinct.”
That wraps it up for this week’s installment. I hope you’ll continue to offer any one of your board members suggestions, input, and comments. On behalf of the entire board, and just as another resident, I also want to thank each of our incredibly valuable members of PHCA for being part of this amazing community. And thank you to our phenomenal volunteers – YOU TRULY ARE PRICELESS !
Yours truly,
Kristy
