University of Minnesota -- Banning Christmas is not enough

By
Industry Observer

Now they want to ban Holidays.

The University of Minnesota has notified employees that, not only is the term Christmas inappropriate, but now even Holiday should be avoided.  The suggested substitution isWinter celebrationApparently, the fact that virtually every society, religion, or tribe, past and present, have celebrated some holiday in December is not enough to allow the word holiday to be used without violating someones rights or feelings.

There are a couple things beyond the obvious that are wrong with this approach.  First, even my dog celebrates the holidays, Christmas to be precise.  Although he's not too fond of Santa, he does enjoy the outdoor lights and the indoor tree, even if he is prohibited from doing what he does best to trees.  It's hard to imagine that any human is completely immune to either a religious or a secular celebration of some holiday on or near the winter solstice.

Second, if Christmas is offensive to anyone, why doesn't the mail get delivered on December 25?  Maybe because the federal government decided that it is a Winter Celebration?  Then why does the government call it Christmas?  Maybe some bureaucrats are just making extra work for themselves creating really stupid policy directives.  Maybe somebody should think about which bureaucrat could replace the traditional angel with that tree stuck....  Well, enough of that.

Back to the suggested substitution for thousands of years of tradition.  Winter celebration?  Who in their right mind celebrates winter?  Face it, it's the absolute worst season, short days and long nights, cold, hard to drive or even walk.  Of all the things that happen this time of year, winter is the worst.

Most Christmas celebrations are slight mutations of secular traditions involving excess food and drink, and other politician-like behavior.  People traditionally did very inappropriate things to help them forget that there was almost no daylight, and it was often a little chilly too.  They celebrated the fact that the days were beginning to get longer, and they all had the day off.  I don't know when they started calling the various holidays holidays, but I bet nobody called them a Winter Celebration.

I agree with you to a point.  However, being a skier, winter is a great season to be celebrated!

Mel, I'm willing to go with tolerated.  Anyway, isn't the best skiing in the last half of March, barely winter and partly spring?  Have you ever tried chasing a boat around the lake?  I think they call that skiing too, and the weather is better:)

Screw them.  This is getting way out of hand!!!  What happened to majority rules!  The minority don't care if our feelings are hurt!

Vern, I really don't think anyone's feelings are hurt.  This is about bureaucracy out of control and little else.  The holiday season occurs in December as it has for thousands of years.  It has been traditionally a season for everyone to have a good time and celebrate the observance that it will stop getting darker.  Some attach religious significance to the season, and some attach nothing but fun to the season.  Then, there's the bureaucrats who insist on doing neither.  Merry Christmas to you and all the other folks in the northern MN latitudes.

Chris Ann, I have been thinking about the word celebration.  There is a church with that name in the metro area here, and Winter Celebration seems to suggest preference for a specific denomination and faith.  I'll report it to the bureaucrats tomorrow morning so they can change their directive.  Maybe the simple one-word designation Winter would be more appropriate, unless it offends sun-worshipers who prefer summer.  Merry Winter?

Hi Mike - As usual, the political correctness cops have it completely wrong. Anybody who can't get into the spirit of the season, and gets their kicks by denying others that enjoyment, is an intolerant jerk and deserves an unpleasant visit from the Ghost of Christmases Yet To Come. Idiots.

Dick, I assume that you are referring to the ghost of winter celebration yet to come:)    These bureaucrats must come from the same stock as the DOT bureaucrats who originated four way yield intersections.  Yes, all must wait until the others have passed through.
