Buy American This Holiday Season

I almost never start my Christmas shopping this early.  In fact, this is the first year I have ventured out before Thanksgiving.  But in light of the recent lead paint scares and recalls from the likes of Mattel, Fisher Price, and Playskool, I decided to get out there early in search of alternatives.  Boy!  What an eye opener!!

Try going to Target, WalMart, or Toys ‘r Us and find a toy that isn't imported from either China, Thailand or Mexico and you get a prize!!  I went as far as to offer my kids a buck for each toy they could find.  They are now 10 and 11 and excited to be the big cousins playing Santa so this was a treasure hunt!  They loved the idea until it became crystal clear that no such toy existed, at least not at my WalMart.

My husband found one K'nex that was supposedly Made in the USA.  We all got terribly excited.  There was a buck I didn't have to pay the kids and I was now on a roll.  But wait...if you scrunch your eyes and read the very, very, very fine print, it reads...."Some components made in China."  DANG!

Back to square one.  I had no idea this would be so difficult.  You see, I am past the days of buying toys that my children would be putting in their mouths and while this might be on young parents' radar, it wasn't on mine until today.  I have about half a dozen gifts to buy for children under the age of 7 and while I'm not as concerned that the older children will be sticking their Legos in their mouths, I'm much more concerned with the ones under 3.  Who knew this would be so difficult?

Once home, I immediately Googled "Toys Made in America" and came up with some great sites - not the least of which included a list by Neil Cavuto of FoxNews.  You will be surprised at how many of these wonderful toys look EXACTLY like the ones you may have played with oh so many years ago!

So instead of reinventing the wheel, here you have it - plus a few of my own.

Remember to check to see if any components of the toys have been made outside the USA.

Let's not forget our toys for big guys...I bet that is an even harder challenge...to find electronics made in the USA...

Buy American...that was a giant campaign years and years ago....good idea then and great idea now! Thanks for the reminder, Irene.

Irene - Thanks for the links...We played a similar game last year at Christmas time only with clothing...That was a challenge as well.  I think I paid $3 out for a 6 hour shopping spree.   It is truly amazing and sad.

IRENE - I bookmarked this post and featured it in Family Ties.  Thanks for the list.  I will share this with my wife.  We are also not usually early shoppers.  This list will come in handy.

Alisa - you know, I think I'm just going to revert to the good ole days and start "making" things.  No adult I know actually NEEDS anything...so if I remember what the holiday season is really about, my little jar of apple jelly will do just fine! LOL

Dawn - Isn't it, though?  Like I told Alisa, time to go back to basics.  That's what it's supposed to be about - not breaking the bank or making big international corporations rich!  Last year, we actually went out in the woods and got a Christmas Tree (think scrawny Charlie Brown tree).  The kids and their cousins picked it out, and we decorated it as much as we could before it started to fall over.  We laughed so hard and had the best time.  Now THAT is a holiday memory I will never forget.

Jason - thank you very much!  I hope it rings true for many of us here at AR.  Whatever holiday you're celebrating, it's all about family, happy memories and certainly about being safe!

Cindy - You're a Grandma??!! But you are tooooooo young!  Honestly, congratulations on the fun of having to buy for a granddaughter and I imagine you'll be buying a lot of the stuff we played with as children!  Blocks, puzzles, and good old fashioned books to read to them!  Those were always my favorites, anyway.

Debbie - I'm glad it will help you.  I've noticed a lot of them overlap toys but it's nice to have some choices other than the local toy stores.  A lot you have to order early but that's why I posted now.  I think everyone still has plenty of time.

Kathy - Enjoy and Happy Holidays!

Very resourceful!  It's so important to watch out for our little ones.  My kids are older, now and their toys are much more complicated (and expensive).  I always was partial to the "old fashioned" toys when they were little.

Elaine - My kids are older, too.  My husband wants to boycott anything made outside the USA but try telling that to a preteen who is dying for an iPod like her big brother and sisters have!  All those electronics, jeez!  I'm looking forward to grandchildren so I can buy "old fashioned" again.  It's time for a bit of simplicity in my life!

Irene that's a great list of toys and sites you've compiled. Thanks for sharing it. I for one will be looking into all of them. Best of luck.

Vincent - I wish I could take credit for all of it but Fox News did most of it.  Everyday,  I find more and more sites offering only USA made merchandise.  I hope the list makes your shopping easier this year.

Hi Irene:  What an incredible boost to our national economy it would be if everyone tried to make a sincere effort to "buy American."  So many new jobs would be created... which would be a great Christmas present or everyone.

Karen - I see this happening in the not-to distant future.  With oil prices going up almost daily and foreign garbage poisoning our kids, it's about time we took matters into our own hands.  I hope it's sooner rather than later.
