The Tebow Element

Tired of the story yet?  An openly Christian and God-believing athlete gets a lot of press for NOT being a tattoo wearing, self-absorbed, mecca for stories about how many men or women he slept with and how many performance enhancing drugs he didn't do ... it has all the 'Elements' of someone being accused of a God-blowing blowhard by the cynical way we look at anything and anyone today.

I'm not a Tebow guy.  Didn't follow him in College and don't follow the Broncos in the NFL.  I'm a Steeler Guy.  And there is this guy on that team that symbolically wears the religious cross after every play as well.  You should watch him.  His name is Troy Polamalu.

Yet Tim has got much more press and scrutiny because ... well, I'm not sure of why?  Maybe because he is a Quarterback.  Maybe because the pundits make THAT the issue instead of, I don't know, calling a spade a spade.

He's a Football Player, folks.  Seems to me, especially at this point, a damn good one.  I don't care about his Religion, though it is nice to have a solid human being at the healm of a media driven compulsion for controversey.  He seems to me a very good role model with a pretty steady head upon his shoulders.  And yet, we treat this as if it is something else.  Maybe it is.  Maybe we need and want and desire our heroes to not look like the faces staring back at us in the mirror.  And maybe, just maybe, Tebow is what we desire but what really we are not.

I will write this.  Tebow isn't Ghandi hijcaking your QB Position.  When he was 28 and still a Virgin, good for him!  I lost mine at 18 during the O.J. Simpson Bronco Chase.  Look at me, I'm writing about Tim Tebow.

In a tough as hell league and in a tougher Media, I personally want the guy to succeed.  If Pittsburgh doesn't win it, I honestly hope he and those Broncos do.

Plus, I bet it would piss off Elway to the n'th degree.  I have a soft spot for those Cleveland Browns when they were relevant contenders.

With my knuckles cold and my shoulders bold, I believe the pundits are out to get him.  And I believe that Tebow should continue to do what he is done so very well to spark the conversation amongst assholes who write and critique for a living yet may never live what he is living ... WIN.

And if Denver faces Pittsburgh in the Playoffs, two believers (Troy & Tebow) will collide.  My guess is the better Football Team will win.  And God will face a more interesting challenge, like who will replace Andy Rooney on 60 minutes?

Jason,  Very good post.  We are Bronco Fans, and very proud of Tebow and who he is, and what he is bringing to Football.  I love the fact that his winning Team is unexplainable.... to the media.  I think many folks are wondering if his GOD could be Real!!  Hey it makes good news, and Glory to God!!!  A Good day in this world.  :)  Thanks for writing this post.

Sardi, I am more of a fan of the "real" football---but this thing is so well written at least I can be a fan of that :)  Both sides always think God is on their side---a most peculiar human attribute for sure.

Having lived in Kentucky and Georgia while Tebow QB'ed Florida, I was a de-facto non-fan (although I appreciated what he did). I have become a fan of his at Denver, a good part of it because he has managed to remain humble throughout all that has gone on. His team believes in him. But "old school" football pundits, just like "old school democrats and republicans" don't want someone different to succeed.

Right now, my biggest thought on this is who would I rather have as a role model for my grand kids: Tim Tebow or Tru Holloway? Compare their news conferences.

Oh yeah, Polamalu is pretty good.

Thanks Jon.  As far as a supreme being, I believe in a higher power and am darn sure I'm not it.

Joan - It is a feel good story, no doubt.  But I really think God has bigger nuts to crack than to get involved in Professional Sports.  Though I'm still questioning the results of the 2001 PBA Regional;)

Buell - We are peculiar bunch, for sure.

Saunders - Well written, my friend.  Hope all is well with you and yours.

Tebow is all that you say - and nothing more. But, that's pretty fine isn't it? ( I like the Steelers too - I have to secretly like them, as my husband is from Maryland - apparently, there's some sort of rival?) Good grief.

I like this post and your irreverent style. I think I've just become a new subscriber. :)

Hi Jason,

just tried to call you.  :(  wanted to finally put a voice with the face.  i do that with folks from AR from time to time.  I don't love tebow, for the same reason as Mike.  He beat my Dawgs while my daughter was attending UGA in Athens.  (ugh)  But I certainly respect anyone who is proud of their faith.  And while I don't run around telling people I'm a God fearing Christian I do try to behave in a manner that demonstrats my faith in God.  I often ask for prayers from my friends and always let others who ask for prayers know I'm doing just that.

As for putting on make up in car... I don't do that anymore.  When I married Donald (last name Baker) I gave up wearing make-up cause one too much make up wearing Tammy Baker was enough for this world.

OMG, I'm laughing hysterically @Tammy's comment--as you know, she dominated the press in our area for YEARS!  The make-up was ALWAYS the topic of conversation!  I'm sure you're saving money AND time by opting not to be the new Tammy Faye in the world!  (We love you more anyway!!)

Jason:  I'm a huge football fan and followed Tebow through college and rooted for his winning the Heisman (sorry Tam!).  I REALLY wanted the Panthers to smarten up and select him but, I guess another great athlete was to fill our desperate need for a good quarterback and Cam Newton has certainly filled that void well!

The scrutiny will always be prevalent; the media should elevate the good role models but, unfortunately 'good' doesn't sell in the media and they prefer to highlight the bad/negative influencers.

Jason, what a great thought provoking post. Sadly the media is for being agnostic and they pick on the ones who have faith. It is not about "role models" it is about pushing an agenda. Anyway that is my two cents on the matter:)

Jason, as Endre put it, you always write some very thought-provoking posts.  I don't get the Tebow thing either.  And, your Steelers will win!  And, Palamalu certainly looks as though he is the man to do it.

Tammy - We shall talk soon.  I no longer have my real phone number on my profile in large part to Zillow;)

Debe - I believe (operative word these days) that Mr. Tim is getting a ton of press.  In my own small way, I'm adding to it.  Good role models come and die with scrutiny.  We have this curious fascination with perfection and once we know the limelight on the latest flavor has doubts to his/her perfection, we tend to channel it to a different direction.  Personally, I dig Tebow and hope he excels.  When I make my million, I'm going to start a rub giving the dirt on the media outlets who give/shove the dirt.

Endre - Nothing wrong with having faith or being agnostic in my view.  My only point is I don't think God cares about Football. God cares about you (read...us) making life better than when you/we entered it.  And if one doesn't believe in God, the appropriate alternative is ... Debe "Freaking" Maxwell! :)

Suzanne - If I was to dream of being a football player, I'd want to be Troy.  And if I were to dream of being a blogger ... I'd maybe comment on one of Endre's posts. :)

Jason - Welcome to Charlotte. As for Tebow, He only won the Heisman and 2 national championships. Maybe the detractors need a guy who shoots himself in the leg at a strip club, or who takes 'roids and becomes unraveled. I think at this level you want a role model that stays out of jail...at least for the kids sake

Thanks Claude.  I'm still not sold that he will make for a long-term successful QB, but he certainly has earned the opportunity to prove me wrong.  And even if I am right, he is still a heck of a football player and belongs in the NFL.  And he is a wonderful role model.

Woltal - I don't think he has a Lois Lane quite yet though:)

First....great to read an Sardi blog...missed you....I love this and I agree I too am a die hard Steeler Fan & need I say... Troy is my hero. & my favorite player of all time .... tough on the field but a gentle spirit.  I agree with you....

. And there is this guy on that team that symbolically wears the religious cross after every play as well.  You should watch him.  His name is Troy Polamalu.

(BTW no one ever asked what he was doing or what the meaning was)

but have to admit I am also a Tebow & Drew Brees fan...hey it's time role model for our kids show up on the football field..It isn't only about stats .  Athletes need to realize they are the role models our kids lives. It is refreshing to hear the good & not the bad........to Tebow, Brees,& Troy as well as, I am sure some others..not all about game or the ego...but walking the talk and making a difference in the lives of others.

The Sports fields need morre...more ...  more..toughness needs to be left on the field...just my opinion
