The Flatiron District, named after the iconic Flatiron Building, is a beautiful neighborhood characterized by exquisite cast-iron architecture and its myriad of novelty stores.
The district was actually given its name by real estate agents – initially, the neighborhood went by the main commercial activity in the area. As such, the name “Toy District” was given to it in the early 20th century, because of the annual American Toy Fair and its proximity to the Toy Center. Thereafter, it was named as the Photo District because of its seemingly magical draw for photographers – many photographers’ studios were set up there during this period of time.

Flatiron is still known for its appeal to the masters of the arts. Here, many artists find solace from the outside world where practicality and science are worth more than abstract interpretations of the world through their eyes. As such, a few museums have sprouted here to honor the presence of these artists – such as the sleazy Museum of Sex.
As the neighborhood begins its long trek through the night, party-goers appear in throngs on streets, all decked out in dashing shirts and elegant dresses. Indeed, the multitude of pubs and clubs in this district will never fail to satiate the night-dweller’s hunger for alcohol and fun.
