Community Candle Lighting Ceremony Newburgh, New Windsor & Cornwall, New York

The Festival of Lights

A
Schedule for Chanukah Candle Lighting:  December 20, 21,22, 2011

The miracle of Chanukah occurred many years ago in a time when there were rules about certain religious practices being illegal. In order to enforce these rules, a tragedy resulted in the destruction of a major religious temple. This temple that the Jews worshiped in daily was basically destroyed. After all was thought to be lost, a small urn of oil was found.  This holy oil was only enough for one day to be used on the altar. The miracle was that it lasted for eight days. During this time of oppressions the people saw that the darkness of the time turned into light and thus giving the people a sense of hope for the future.

Today we light the Menorah, a symbol of the Jewish people, for eight nights. Each night we add one candle to remember the miracle of so many years ago. The teachings of the holiday are thought to be religious freedom, and hope for tolerance and a better world to live in.

The community is lucky to have their own candle lighting ceremony each year in multiple locations, followed by a Chanukah celebration, open to all in the community.

Left to right or right to left.

As I drive along and see all the brilliant white lights, I think this is a festival of lights.

Erv,

This is the way it works....

On the first night of Chanukah, set one candle to the far right of the menorah. On the following night add a second light to the left of the first one, and then add one light each night of Chanukah—moving from right to left.

Each night, light the newest (leftmost) candle first, and continue lighting from left to right. In other words, we add lights to the menorah from right to left, and we light from left to right.

It has always been a challenge to remember... but the fun is in celebration after with the potato latkes...
