United We Stand - United States of America flagVeterans Day is Sunday, November 11, 2007.  The Federal Holiday will be taken on Monday, November 12, 2007.  My grandfather, Mr. Robert Chandler Ray, proudly served in World War II in the 134th Infantry Regiment.  On Veterans Day, he grows quiet as he thinks of the companions, friends and family he lost during the war.  I am blessed to have an Oral History that my son, Chris DeRepentigny, transcribed as part of a history project, because I was a girl...he didn't like to share his war stories with me.

Patriotic Ribbon in celebrationof Veterans DayAbout Veterans Day:

Great Britain, France, and other countries celebrate November 11th as Armistice Day to commemorate the ending of World War I on November 11, 1918. Canada celebrates Remembrance Day on this same date.

In 1919,  President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as Armistice Day to remind Americans of the tragedies of war.  In 1954, Congress changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day to honor all United States Veterans.  Today, in the United States, Veterans Day commemorates the courage and patriotism of all the men and women who have served in the United States military.

Take a day to honor the sacrifice the Veterans in your life have made!
